Quilt sandwich help!

Any quilters around who can advise?

I'm having trouble making my quilt sandwich - it's got me sobbing and tearing my hair out, I've tried three times now and every time the backing ends up all wrinkly and even with creases pinned into it.

am not helped by having 4 year old around to distract me but disposing of him is not an option and he is unfortunately fascinated by the whole thing so even the offer of a go on my laptop can't tear him away.

would it help if I ironed all three layers one at a time and then together? seriously, could I even starch the backing to keep it flat?

would it help doing it on a tiled floor instead of a carpet or would that make it harder as the whole thing would slip around?

would it be easier on a table? we don't have a huge table but could move it along I suppose?

any tips?

thanks.

OP is live blogging (well, was apparently going to - FAIL! - see below) the MN experience: antimisandry.com/feminist-misandry/my-experiment-mumsnet-40958.html :o

Unfortunately for him no other non-feminists appear to have taken an interest yet. Maybe OP is just feeling hurt because he's lonely? Awww, ... :(

I do mine on a table, and I do have to move it around a little - and I always wait till the children aren't around. I haven't tried it on a carpet but then ours is usually covered with cat hair as I'd rather be quilting than hoovering!

I tape mine to the floor or have done one big one in two halves on the table.
I taped one half of the, backing around the edge to the edges of the table made the sandwich and pinned it with ordinary safety pins, untaped that half and then repeated with the other.

thank you everyone, this is fantastically helpful, TAPE didn't cross my mind, what a great idea!

I am just using ordinary long quilting pins, so I may well get some of those special safety pins.

and some clips because if I can do it on the table there will be less trouble from children. Smile

I used a tutorial but I cant find it now. I googled images rather than normal google to find it.

Basically, tape the bottom layer to the floor, then I used the spray adhesive stuff (I think it is 505 spray) and the curved safety pins around the edges and a few in the middle.

I bought the wadding & spray from asding.com and the pins from the cotton patch.

done it!

5th time lucky.... (I had to restart halfway through this time because the wadding wasn't central, duh.)

I did it on a table and was going to tape it but then I realised that the weight of the fabric hanging over edges was helping hold it flat.

It's way better than before, glad I perservered Smile

thanks again for great advice.

Another one here who uses curved safety pins - they made a huge difference and make it much easier. Smile

Depending on the size of the quilt, I usually use either the dining table or the hall floor (wooden) and often volunteer/corral DH to assist in making the sandwich - quite handy having another pair of adult hands about. Greyhounds banished, as they usually try to lie down on it or demand tickles. Can't imagine doing it with a 4 year old about - def one for after he's gone to bed, I'd say.
