I made myself a wallet, just for fun - I love sewing, i put a picture on Facebook of my finished very first ever attempt - and 6 people have asked me to make them one, either for themselves or as a gift. Theyve asked how much to charge

(photos are on my profile)

its not really my thing, its very cath kidston, but it was scraps I had from other projects (pin boards)

tell me what you think??

could I do a craft fair and sell things like this? I really enjoyed it

Yes, I think you could. It looks nice with all the relative compartments needed for coins, notes and cards Smile

just remember, OnlywantsOne, to credit the lady from Confessions of a Fabricoholic with the pattern, if you read her small-print she doesn't mind people selling her wallets at craft fairs so long as they credit her!

meant to add I like the wallet, but you know that already Grin

I know, sorry didn't mean to sound like I was telling you what to do! Blush Sorry.

Ijust meant, if you sell them at a fair or something, I think she wants a mention, I only sa this because I am thinking of doing the exact same thing and wanted to check I wouldn't be making anyone cross!

how much do the materials cost and how long do they take to make?
decide what hourly rate you want and you have your price!
I always charge £10ph...

OnlyWantsOne · 15/06/2011 19:06

I don't really know how long it took. As was looking after kids etc so probably not a very accurate reflection. I have looked on folksy - think I will charge £15

Or is that too much? I don't have much confidence in doing this!!

15 isn't too much, don't undersell yourself. how much are materials?

Report
OnlyWantsOne · 15/06/2011 19:10

Hmm that material is £10 - metre plus the clasp, the zip...

sit down and work out how much material you have used and the cost. be realistic if you can't pay yourself anything to make them then just stick to making for friends.

Reminds me a lot of Cath Kidston stuff, I have a purse very similar to the pink dotty one but blue.

OnlyWantsOne · 15/06/2011 19:19

The kath kidston look was deliberate. Just fabric I had - does £15 sound ok? I will tell the people that want them!!

Wasn't deliberate!!!

I like the fabric buckets too. Very nice.
15 pounds is fine.
Go for it! :)

I paid £25 for a 'real' Kidston purse, yours is v nice & have seen similar on ebay for similar price if not more - £15 sounds fair to me!

OnlyWantsOne · 15/06/2011 22:18

£15 it is then!!

I would not pay £15 for such a flimsy fabric wallet, £8 max. It looks like it will get dirty really easily and be really floppy.

However it looks well made and neat.

gapants it really isn't flimsy, you can't tell in the pictures but the wallet is firm and solid (interfacing is used and there are a lot of layers of fabric) and if it gets dirty, it can go in the wash.

It's worth more than £8, you'd pay more than £8 for a cheap badly made purse from accessorize that will fall apart after a year.

Some people just don't understand the quality and time and effort that goes into handmade things. If you want cheap, go to primark, if you want handmade, be prepared to pay for it.

Rant over.

BelovedCunt · 15/06/2011 22:40

thing is people will jsut go to primark, it is hard to make money on handmade stuff unless it is really special

god, gapants, talk about knocking any non existant confidence I may have had, cheers :(
