I made myself a wallet, just for fun - I love sewing, i put a picture on Facebook of my finished very first ever attempt - and 6 people have asked me to make them one, either for themselves or as a gift. Theyve asked how much to charge

(photos are on my profile)

its not really my thing, its very cath kidston, but it was scraps I had from other projects (pin boards)

tell me what you think??

could I do a craft fair and sell things like this? I really enjoyed it

vnmum Wed 15-Jun-11 10:24:49

Yes, I think you could. It looks nice with all the relative compartments needed for coins, notes and cards smile

OnlyWantsOne Wed 15-Jun-11 12:17:17

now 7 orders!! I better get to the fabric shop - so I can make some variations, the pink is blinding me - my blog is also grimly pink

it makes my teeth itch - shall have to sort it!! get drunk and try to remember how to change it

OnlyWantsOne Wed 15-Jun-11 12:17:36

how much do you think things like that sell for?

AlmaMartyr Wed 15-Jun-11 12:40:23

No idea about price but it looks fab, you could definitely sell them I reckon.

OnlyWantsOne Wed 15-Jun-11 12:42:30

aww thank you smile

overmydeadbody Wed 15-Jun-11 16:41:59

just remember, OnlywantsOne, to credit the lady from Confessions of a Fabricoholic with the pattern, if you read her small-print she doesn't mind people selling her wallets at craft fairs so long as they credit her!

overmydeadbody Wed 15-Jun-11 16:42:56

meant to add I like the wallet, but you know that already grin

OnlyWantsOne Wed 15-Jun-11 17:55:29

hey!! I did on my blog - and you!!

overmydeadbody Wed 15-Jun-11 18:40:53

I know, sorry didn't mean to sound like I was telling you what to do! blush Sorry.

Ijust meant, if you sell them at a fair or something, I think she wants a mention, I only sa this because I am thinking of doing the exact same thing and wanted to check I wouldn't be making anyone cross!

OnlyWantsOne Wed 15-Jun-11 18:43:29

lol smile

how much are you going to sell them for? Because I need to tell the people how much Im charging - so I can make them - I have 6 orders - and Ive put them on facebook

RobynLou Wed 15-Jun-11 18:46:29

how much do the materials cost and how long do they take to make?
decide what hourly rate you want and you have your price!
I always charge £10ph...

OnlyWantsOne Wed 15-Jun-11 19:06:17

I don't really know how long it took. As was looking after kids etc so probably not a very accurate reflection. I have looked on folksy - think I will charge £15

Or is that too much? I don't have much confidence in doing this!!

BelovedCunt Wed 15-Jun-11 19:09:04

15 isn't too much, don't undersell yourself. how much are materials?

OnlyWantsOne Wed 15-Jun-11 19:10:57

Hmm that material is £10 - metre plus the clasp, the zip...

BelovedCunt Wed 15-Jun-11 19:13:08

sit down and work out how much material you have used and the cost. be realistic if you can't pay yourself anything to make them then just stick to making for friends.

akaEmmaFrost Wed 15-Jun-11 19:15:23

Reminds me a lot of Cath Kidston stuff, I have a purse very similar to the pink dotty one but blue.

OnlyWantsOne Wed 15-Jun-11 19:19:18

The kath kidston look was deliberate. Just fabric I had - does £15 sound ok? I will tell the people that want them!!

OnlyWantsOne Wed 15-Jun-11 19:19:35

Wasn't deliberate!!!

HopeForTheBest Wed 15-Jun-11 19:22:33

I like the fabric buckets too. Very nice.
15 pounds is fine.
Go for it! smile

UrsulaBuffay Wed 15-Jun-11 20:24:18

I paid £25 for a 'real' Kidston purse, yours is v nice & have seen similar on ebay for similar price if not more - £15 sounds fair to me!

OnlyWantsOne Wed 15-Jun-11 22:18:56

£15 it is then!!

gapants Wed 15-Jun-11 22:22:42

I would not pay £15 for such a flimsy fabric wallet, £8 max. It looks like it will get dirty really easily and be really floppy.

However it looks well made and neat.

overmydeadbody Wed 15-Jun-11 22:27:41

gapants it really isn't flimsy, you can't tell in the pictures but the wallet is firm and solid (interfacing is used and there are a lot of layers of fabric) and if it gets dirty, it can go in the wash.

It's worth more than £8, you'd pay more than £8 for a cheap badly made purse from accessorize that will fall apart after a year.

Some people just don't understand the quality and time and effort that goes into handmade things. If you want cheap, go to primark, if you want handmade, be prepared to pay for it.

Rant over.

BelovedCunt Wed 15-Jun-11 22:40:06

thing is people will jsut go to primark, it is hard to make money on handmade stuff unless it is really special
