Assuming you had a proper rotary cutter, mat and rulers, books are always good. Or my mother is asking for one of those mini irons that you can use just to iron little bits of applique.

Maybe a basting gun although some people don't like them. One brand I think makes bigger holes than other so you would have to research.

Some top of the range scissors - ones with very sharp tips for applique work. They aren't cheap but are worth the money imo.

Or a fabric selection - either a set of fat quarters or a jelly roll. The buyer would have to know their taste though.

Just off to Hobbycraft for a pressie for DS so if will report back if anything provides further inspiration.

Everything Niecie said plus a walking foot. They are amazing. Cost about £30-40 and it stops the layers of fabric going under the presser foot unevenly so you get perfect seams. And I would add a bias binding gadget and safety pins.

Oh thanks, I have cutters, mats. Have got a walking foot, yes they are very expensive but sooo necessary.

I think I'm going to have to get a basting gun. I can't stand all the pinning and I can't seem to get the back tight enough. But there are lots. I'll have to delve.

I don't know about bias binding. I make my own for the quilt edges, but that's not bias binding Could you explain its uses?

I am having problems with the bondweb I bought. The unused stuff has come apart, so is useless. What's a good bonding medium. I'm not using bondaweb again!
