CVS - 3rd time next week after 2 Terminations for T21

I'm pregnant for the fourth time (have one DS - almost 4. Pregnacies 2 and 3 resulted in terminations for T21 following definitive diagnosis via CVS for T21. It was the hardest decision of our lives to terminate but in our family circumstances we felt it was the right one us. I'm 40 now (gosh how did that happen!!) and am due for CVS next week - we are skipping the nuchal/blood test as we have been told that my age/past will almost certainly put us at high risk. Anyway I suppose I'm just looking for some positive stories that it might work out this time - part of me thinks if its happened twice its bound to happen again but on the other hand I keep thinking third time lucky. So far my nerve has been quite strong but as the test approaches I can feel it starting to crack a bit. Anyway thanks for listening to my ramble.

Hi Makinglists i just wanted to wish you the very best of luck for the CVS - i will keep everything crossed for a good result for you and your family.

I sadly had a termination last year for a chromosomal disorder and am now 24 weeks pregnant again with what will be my first child - everything looks good so far. There are many of us that have been through this (and a couple of ladies who have been through it twice) on the pregnant after a termination for abnormalities thread - you are very welcome to join us.

Katiecubs thank you for your post - sorry for the delay in getting back to you - have horrid stuffy cold so shuffled off to bed early last night. I will check out the thread - feel y calm about it all today and very different to the last two pregnancies (apart from the nausea)- either rather serene (or perhaps denial??) so perhaps this is a good sign that it will work out differently this time.

Oh poor you, sounds nasty i hope you feel better soon!

I'm very glad to hear you are feeling much calmer about it all today and i'm sure thats a really good sign. This time around (despite the worrying) i also had a feeling deep down that it would all work out ok and it did

Just an update went to the hospital today and after scanning the consultant said they couldn't do CVS as my placenta was in the wrong place. They have said I can have amnio in three weeks time and have booked me an appointment. The consultant did have a good look at the baby and so far everything looked good and she measured the nuchal fold which was 1.4mm. As due to our history and my age (40) we opted to go straight for diagnostic testing so haven't had bloods done but the nuchal result is (very) cautiously encouraging and gives us a risk factor of 1:315 as opposed to my background risk of 1:68 - though I'm fully aware that if we had bloods done my risk could well be a lot higher. The nuchal fold measurement is much better that with my two DS pregnancies (which measured over 4mm and 2.8/3mm). Feel a bit 'odd' this pm as we were all geared up for the CVS rollercoaster of emotions and that's now been delayed for a few weeks but perhaps been given some very cautious grounds for optomism

Hello makinglists

just thought I'd stop by as I have been in a very similar situation. After a first successful pregnancy, I have had 2 terminations for T21, also a MMC which was later discovered to be due to T21 after tissue karyotyping. I have since had a baby, born in February this year.

Your nuchal width seems excellent and must surely make you feel more optimistic. Our two terminations saw widths of around the 4mm mark and put us very much on alert. Also, your overall risk has improved tremendously and this must make you feel very much more positive, which is superb. It's such a stressful time and anything that alleviates the strain in even the tiniest of ways, can only be a good thing.

One final thought. If the wait for the amnio is too long to cope with, the FMC on Harley Street are a good bet. I had a placenta which failed to oblige in 2005. Our local NHS hospital declined to run the test on this basis but they performed the procedure there, with no hesitation or fuss. The receptionist told me she had never seen the Professor fail to get a sample. However, it sounds as if you're in a good place right now and this information is not really necessary, which is great!

All the best for a healthy pregnancy. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks shangrila for sharing your story it really helps to know that others have had a similar experience and since had a successful outcome.

Hi,

Just saw this post today.

In my first pregnancy I had a result of 1:24. Nuchal thickness was 2.7mm. I was very positive and NEVER thought that anything could be wrong. I did the CVS....

Then the big shock. I called from the trainstation the FMC to get my results. Positive for T21. Everything swam in front of my eyes. I hung up and went to work. Had to smile throught the day... Called my husband who at the time was in Africa on business trip.

On the way home broke down at the station in a flood of tears and walked home. All alone, no family, no husband. We decided to have a termination. It was heartbreaking. Termination did not go well either. Had to go after 9 months for another operation. Retained tissues.

Then I got pregnant again(at 39). And this time it was all worry worry worry. I went for Nuchal scan and blood test. Results came back even worser then the first time. 1:17. This time I was convinced it would be the same outcome. I called for the results and all was clear.

Today I am 40 and have a healthy 3 month old baby.

Makinglists: It is a terrible journey you had this happening twice. You must be very strong. Your nuchal scan is VERY VERY good! I have a strong feeling all will be well.

I reall would like to know the outcome. Will be thinking of you and wishing you strenght and happiness!

jaabaar thank you so much for telling me your story it makes such a difference to know you are not alone in this. I do feel so different this pregnancy and since the failed CVS appointment strangely calm about it all (I guess that is in part being becuase we have been given some grounds for optomisim). Amnio is next week so we will see what happens from there. Thank you so very much for your message.

Just a quick update - had amnio last week and all went well with that (very simple less uncomfortable than CVS, the only problem I had was the surgical wash they put on your tummy made my eczema prone skin a bit sore - but who cares!). The Consultant was very positive and said that she would be surprised if there was anything wrong. So far having been feeling optomistic but the results are due tomorrow (have taken the day off work - wouldn't be able to focus and past form has shown that work isn't the greatest place to get results)-but now I'm starting to wobble and my optomisim is going if its happened twice then won't it happen again - feeling pretty scared now. I know not everyone were terminate for T21 but we spent a lot of time weighing it all up last time and felt it was the right decision for our family and those reasons haven't really changed though I respect different opinions and that others might may make a different choice. I'm rambling a bit now but it helps just to write down and acknowldge how dam sacred I'm feeling now - thanks for reading my incoherent waffle!!

Just wanting to say that I'm wishing you the very best for tomorrow Makinglists.

The omens look so good for you now, and how wonderful it will be if you get that reassurance (and I'm sure you will) so that you can relax for the rest of your pregnancy.

Keeping everything crossed!

Thank you for your message and good wishes - feel in this strange limbo of being 16 weeks pregnant but not pregnant (if that makes sense - only a very few people know I am though I'm now starting to look pregnant). Will let you all know how it goes tomorrow. Love ML

Just to update you all - had the call from the hospital a while ago and the quick result for T21 is clear - so relieved though feel a bit strange - think I'm still in shock!!! - Have to wait another week for the full result (the screening co-ordinator explained that this checks for mosaicism but that 97% of samples tested won't have it). Looks like we are almost there - thank you all so much for your thoughts and good wishes. Love ML.

Fantastic! I haven't posted on this thread but have been watching(ended a pregnancy for T21 a month ago & can't imagine going through it twice, poor you, brave you, yay! for you this time) and keeping my fingers crossed. HUGE relief for you & I know everything will be fine. I know its easier said than done but I hope you will be able to somewhat relax and dare to enjoy your pregnancy now!
