Hey everyone, complete parenting newbie here. My wife and I are at 14 weeks and a day and after a nerve-wracking wait for that first scan everything seemed to go successful s few weeks back with baby lookIng healthy and NT came back as 1.7 which they didn't really say anything about.

My wife is 29 and I am 36, this is all so new to us. She's had quite bad morning sickness in T1 its been pretty constant throughout the day.

We opted for the blood tests for DS and the other two and the letter came today telling us we are 1:160 for DS and 1:500000 for Edwards. I want to stress here I know lots of similar posts are lower then 160 but my wife is really scared that it's so close to the 150 threshold from low risk to high risk.

This forums helped me loads tonight just reading through other people's experiences but I'm almost overwhelmed with information.

What options are there for us? My wife and I are going to be worrying like crazy and I know if there is any hint of a problem that she would want tests to find out for certain. Can anyone explain the tests and how risky / accurate they are?

Worried dad to be here - appreciate and help or advice how I can support my wife.

We tested 1:100 for DS. We were offered a CVS, but we couldn't face the miscarriage risk (we'd had 4 previous MCs) so declined after a lot of soul-searching. We had some non-invasive scans at a private clinic which reassured us a bit. Anyway, our son was absolutely fine when he popped out - although we did worry a lot through the pregnancy. All this was 8 years ago and I believe there are now a number of options without the MC risk. Best of luck.

From what I remember if they don't call you it's a better sign isn't it? Sorry if it isn't. I can't remember what my numbers were either.
FWIW my friends mum was told the baby would have DS and she was born and didn't have DS.
On the very rare occasion it can be wrong.
I wouldn't worry about your results. Although close to the threshold doesn't mean your baby will have DS. Try to remain positive and ring your midwife to discuss

You can pay privately for blood tests to get a fairly difinitive answer and there's no risk of mc. I'm sure someone will come in and a y what they're called. Harmony ttest maybe?

Just to reassure you, those figures are very crudely calculated from your wife’s age, bloodwork and scan. Hi up can to the harmony test for a more accurate reading on DS. It’s non-invasive and no risk yo baby (they take a blood sample) but it can take a couple of weeks to get your results.

Hi, are you able discuss it with the screening midwife? As others said, there is a non-invasive NIPT test which is fairly good for Down Syndrome. However, it can also raise anxiety, both whilst waiting for results and in case a false positive is found. If you go for it, make sure you research the clinic, and keep in mind it is not diagnostic and positive result can often be a false positive. There were quite a few threads about it here recently.
