Antenatal tests

Short humerus+ femur on USS

Sunandsea1 · 24/11/2018 11:59

Hi,

I had a growth scan which showed the femur at 24 weeks under 10th percentile and the humerus on the 5th. We had a low risk 1:6000 risk of T21 in the first trimester. Nothing was really said during the scan only that I should have a repeat in 4 weeks. Did anyone have the same issue before and has more positive storied to share than Dr Google?

Thanks.

Yes I had the same whilst pregnant and everything turned out perfectly. At different stages during my pregnancy my son's femur length was measured as 'short', I had extra scans with fetal medicine etc at the start and then growth scans every 4 weeks after that....his FL ranged from the 2nd-12th percentile at different times during my pregnancy.
My lb is now a cheeky 6 month old and has no problems at all, he maybe has slightly short, stubby legs just like his dad SmileSmileand all his uncles, but is on all the normal height/weight charts for his age.
Please try not to worry, remember someone always needs to be in that bottom 5/10%, albeit I know that is easier said than done x

Please don't worry much more common than you think.

Hi sonographer here, don’t worry, we are generally only concerned when FL is off the end of the chart (as in below the 3rd centile) x

Thank you so much. I hope it won't fall further. I have been immensly worried. Will step away from Google for the remainder of pregnancy!!!!

One of my twins was under 2nd percentile for femur. She just had short little legs!

We had this at at our 20 week scan 2 weeks ago. The femur length is measuring 2 weeks behind. We went back 2 days later for a scan with the consultant and it seems that baby is on the 3rd centile for all long bones. We were offered an amnio but declined, as both our NHS tests and NIPT tests have been low risk for trisonomies. We have another growth scan on Wednesday, to check that baby is growing ok. I'm hoping that he's just short, like his parents (I'm 5.2 and DH is around 5.6). No advice, but here for a handheld if you need it, as we're experiencing the same thing xxx

Thanks everyone for your replies. I unfortunately had another growth scan which showed that the femur remained on 10th percentile but all other long bones are very small, on or below the 1st percentile. Although the bones in itself look good and the specialist did not see other features of dwarfism I am obviously very concerned now. The head is on 54th percentile and the abdomen on 26th. I am 30 weeks.

Has anyone anymore experience in this?

@Sunandsea1 hi I am just jumping on as would like to know how you're getting on?

We have been told the same thing F&H length under 5th centile. Also "quite a small chest" the report says. Did an amnio test and still have week and a half of waiting for results! Came back normal for downs etc...which is great news but we are absolutely besides ourselves! This worry is awful. Dr said it could be a lethal skeletal disorder! Im hoping so much that it's a load of rubbish!

Praying for anyone going through this x

missC I hope things turned out ok? I am in a similar situation atm but haven’t had an amino yet. I’m worried sick.

@ThePenIsBlue
Hiya. Not great news for us at all. Amnio came back clear for a lethal kind of skeletal dysplasia, but it's still believed that our DS has a lethal kind because his chest is "severely small" we got referred for a second opinion at Kings College fetal med centre in London where they have confirmed how very small the chest is. This is what the biggest problem is! The chest! We have been left completely devastated! We have decided to go through to full term (or as close to as I may need to be induced now) It's going to be the toughest three months, but we couldn't go through terminating. I really hope your news isn't devastating like this! I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy!!

Have you been told small chest too???? Praying for you 🙏🙏🙏

I’m so sorry missC

Chest is apparently normal size, abdomen, head heart all look fine. Just exceptionally small measurements for femur length and humerus, radius, tibia and fibia . Some of them are below the 5 percentile....

I’m going for an amino in 10 days

@Berety123 I can completely empathise. Is your hospital specialist with scans then?
We had to travel to London to have extra tests, which confirmed lethal skeletal dysplasia ☹️ the limbs weren't the problem they also found he has a very small chest which is what makes it the lethal kind. We have known now since 17/1 and I'm due in 9weeks. I can empathise with the emotions you're feeling right now I totally can.

Was this not picked up at 20wks?

I hope so much for you that it's not serious and your baby will be just fine 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

omg I'm so sorry to hear this😢no 20w was ok, I have more scans because of GD so that was a shock, I'm so sorry to ask you that but is termination was ever a option for you? I read story about couple who waited to full term and turn up to be healthy😊

MisssC3025 · 31/03/2020 23:17

I know it's awful. I'm holding on to so much hope, but at same time have to think of the worse case too.

It's okay. Yes it was an option, but we knew almost straight away that this just wasn't for us. I understand why it may be for some, but for us it wasnt.

Oh did you. Love those miracle stories. What were they told was wrong?

I hope your scans go well and they monitor you for GD as best as possible during these hard times in hospitals right now! Is this your first?
