Antenatal tests

Eugh. NT 4.2mm and worried

Went for my 12 week scan today and NT came back as 4.2mm. This is an ICSI pregnancy 2nd baby - have had ups and downs and have had 2 weeks off after a big bleed (subchorionic haematoma). Thought things were getting better.

Last night I was looking at previous scan picture and noticed the profile picture of the baby looked like there was increased fluid there but convinced myself it was all OK - enough to sleep anyway.

Today the sonographer went very quiet and kept measuring and measuring and then told us the news. I was told not to worry and was booked in for fetal medicine "in 2 weeks time". Is this normal? I feel it's far too long and they have told me that takes me out of the window for a CVS having to wait. Ive read other's accounts of the same process and they have had tests within days.

Anyway - we've booked in for NIPT today at 8pm and hopefully will have some sort of result by the weekend.

Looking for some hand holding :(

So sorry you are having a difficult time.

The nipty will be pretty accurate with results as far as trisomies go, although I know bigger nt can be linked to other issues. It could also be nothing.

Have you heard of, or spoken to, arc? They are a brilliant charity for those facing worrying antenatal test results and are very informed and supportive.

I was actually given a card for ARC today - took it as a bad sign when the midwife handed it over but it sounds like they are there for support through every stage of the process - thank you.

My mother was with me when I got the results - she couldn't quite take everything on board and then felt for her as I put the brave face on and explained it to her.

It's going to be a long few weeks.

No, it's not a bad sign, they are there to talk through all options and also other tests that are available or that you might be offered. Sometimes it's just someone to listen who understands that horrid waiting time between an issue and results, whatever those results are the waiting is tough.

The nipty will give you some answers. It might be that they're waiting for an amnio as cvs can't rule out mosaic forms of chromosomal issues (where the placenta is affected but the baby is not).

Be kind to yourself while waiting. I got really bad results at 21 weeks but one of the worst parts I remember was the waiting.

Thank you!

Blood test done tonight and private scan NT was 3.75mm - she seemed to think that she'd measured it accurately but the NHS sonographer was measuring over and over so I don't know what is more accurate.

Just a weeks wait now!

Fingers crossed for you. Having had 2 nt scans with my ds within a week you can see the measurement isn't 100% accurate. I think it's a tricky measurement if you've got a wriggly one (as ds was)

Try to be gentle to yourself this week. Waiting and having nothing to 'do' about it is so hard sometimes.

Thank you again. It's a great comfort knowing there's someone who understands. Someone at work told me today they'd been through similar with a good outcome but it was just nice to not feel so isolated. xxxx

So NHS bloods back and 1 in 5 risk given to me - hasn't really changed the risk I was expecting from what i've read. On day 6 of waiting for NIPT. Was wanting the results to come back today but I guess they aren't. This has been the worst wait ever. Feel like I should be doing something more than this :(

hopeful I had a nuchal fold measurement of 3.6mm with my dd2 and it gave me a risk of 1 in 86, I had the harmony test so had that awful 10 day wait to find if everything was OK.. After that test my risk changed to 1 in 10,000 so very low. I had to have an extra heart scan at 21wks to rule out if that may have been the cause but everything was fine at that scan too.. And she was born perfectly fine if not 12 days late and huge!! I know this wait is awful, but remember the odds are still in your favour.. Did they notice/mention any other factors associated with trisomys 13,18 and 21? I know my midwife made sure to reassure me that nothing else was of concern in the scan pics.. Will keep everything crossed that you have good news soon Flowers

In hope younger your results soon Hopeful. My last baby had a 4mm nuchal and we were given a 1:8 chance of trisomyies but we then did Harmony (and a new private measurement of 3.6mm) and were out as v low risk. Baby was born without any health issues.

Thanks for the reassurance - I am trying to stay positive but had an almighty low point last night and today. I guess my hopes were riding on a resolution by now.

I was rung by the company I had the NIFTY with today who said I'd have to wait an additional 3 days for the result as I have lower fetal DNA than most in my blood stream and presumably have to have further amplification of the DNA before additional testing.

I feel awfully abandoned (I know that's a strong word) by the hospital. Have a fetal medicine appt now for the 25th but I haven't been reassured in anyway apart from "don't worry". I wish they would have at least gone through the ultrasound with me - either way and said "this looks normal/this doesn't look normal". I had looked at my own pictures and can see a nasal bone and the baby has a good profile picture. Baby was also measuring a week ahead (we are precise with our dates due to the IVF) and was moving everything fine. Our nifty scan didn't really reassure although she said everything was grossly normal - however didn't seem to look in depth at anything at all.

The problem is with the waiting you start wondering if there are things that you're not being told at every point. Myself and my husband have a medical background which to a degree makes things worse as each midwife/healthcare we come across changes as soon as they know and treat us like we don't need any additional information or go the opposite way and clam up because they are afraid of what they are saying.

This has been a real eye opener for me from a professional point of view. If this changes the way I deal with information provision and support for the people I work with some good will come of it.

Update - had my results today and all low risk for all abnormalities tested for! I was shaking on the phone and have never ever felt so thankful. Have to wait for our fetal medicine appt on wed and I guess in depth abnormality scans but for now i'm just enjoying the moment.

Thank you all for your support - without a doubt the worst week of our lives

So glad to read your update. We had 1:7 risk for DS1 and he is absolutely healthy 3.5 years old now, however, it was such a hard wait for CVS results (it was before NIPT were available). Hope all goes well in all further appointments!
