Anyone had a CVS? Quick question please

Hi all

I have to have a CVS in a week's time and have been reading about them, I read that they can be abdominal or transvaginal (last time I had an amnio which was needle through the abdominal wall).

How likely is it I will need a TV CVS, and what's involved? How does it compare with a smear? What do they put up there, is it a needle or catheter or what?

Just getting really nervous and stressed about the whole thing now and no idea how likely a TV is nor how bad it might be - any info appreciated, thanks!

Ali

Here to hand hold,
I've not heard of anyone having a transvaginal, everyone I've come across has had an abdominal.
It is very very similar to the amino, slightly larger needle as they are taking a placenta sample but you are well numbed so feel nothing (I think it was awful for dh who watched the needle silly idiot)
I would have thought that risks were higher for anything that went near the cervix but someone with far more medical knowledge will be along shortly I'm sure,
I'll be thinking of you, I hope the outcome is all fine

im currently waiting for the results from mine. the procedure was a doddle. a bit of local and the needle slips right in. getting through the uterus/membranes was a bit of a jolt, but it didnt hurt. my hint, watch the screen, not the needle!
ive had a few cramps/random sharp pains in the couple of days following, but nothing scary.
Holding your hand. I hope you get the results you want. xx

Thanks so much for the replies.

I am feeling a bit less worried about the procedure itself now, hopefully I will be able to be brave! I didn't have any numbing for the amnio, I will ask for some for the CVS I think.

Not sure how much to rest the next day - should I plan for someone else to look after 14 mo DD or carry on as normal with baby groups etc?

It's not until a week on Wednesday so I have quite a while to fret and brood before it's out of the way.

Good luck with yours SOCCPuss, hope the results come back early and good.

I had a cvs in jan - abdominally; no anaesthetic. It didn't hurt at all, only lasted 20 seconds or so. I just shut my eyes and imagined I was on a beach. Got the odd twinge/pokey feeling later that day and was advised to take the afternoon off work. I think I felt more traumatised emotionally than feeling any pain as I knew deep down it wouldn't be good news.
Fingers crossed yours goes well.
P.S. I'm hoping not to have cvs this time round as I'm too much of a wimp. Doing harmony instead.

Thanks Yikes. Yeah I had Harmony last time but it came back not enough DNA so had to go back and give more blood, then it came back positive for a chromosomal abnormality and we had to have Amnio to check results, unfortunately it was right so TFMR.

So we were advised to go for CVS this time, I am terrified of both the procedure and the result!

I hope the harmony works out for you, I was one of only a few who had to redo, and was my clinic's first ever positive too.

I think it's great though as noninvasive and no risk.

I would have a quiet afternoon and go to bed. I took a cup of tea and a book to bed to get me staying still as I was so afraid something would go wrong (I have had multiple mc's in the past so was very anxious)
If someone else can take your dd to the groups, it might be a good idea
Hope your result is ok
