how old is ds? imo if you need mummy's help to do warhammer you're too young for it (well that's what i told ds2). he's 10 now and does it on his own...

I did watch a warhammer painting workshop in one of those sci-fantasy shops once. It was very entertaining.

Painting them is actually quite soothing. it's the constant questions about who could kill who in an Ork vs. Spacemarine fight that do my nut in

DS2 is into Warhammer, luckily he is happy to sit by himself and paint (will be 10 next month).

I did however though have to stay with him in the bloody warhammer shop during the week - they run painting classes and games in the holidays but as he is under 12 parents have to stay - twas like having teeth pulled out.

I run a Warhammer gaming club once a week in the evening and I would just like to say....

HIDE ALL THE TIME!!

There is nothing, nothing worse in this hobby than a child whose parent(s) paint the figures for them.

Helping them use the craft knife/superglue etc for assembly is one thing, because there are safety issues, but that doesn't apply to the painting. They could DRINK the paint by the potful and be fine - t'is waterbased for just that reason. (Although I'm not answering for what state everything else would be in if they did :-) )

If they can't/won't/don't want to do the painting (or the rule book reading!) then they're in the wrong hobby. They're either too young for it still or they have the wrong temperament. There is nothing more aggravating than a child who willy-nilly damages other's models because they have no concept of the time and effort they take to produce and ABSOLUTELY nothing worse for a volunteer club organiser like myself (or a store staff member, for that matter) than a child who never gets past that stage because their parent(s) bail them out.

It is a three part hobby - collecting, producing, using - and, to begin with, they need to do all three components, so that they learn the full scope of the system.

The suggested age for the hobby is 13+ - which is why you will have been asked to stay! - although we often find kids much younger are fine. They just have to be fine ALONE!

OTOH - if you live anywhere near Ramsbottom in Lancs, I'll gladly have your DS on Thursday evenings for a couple of hours and he can discuss Orks vs Spacemarines etc to his heart's content.

Just don't tell him he's really discussing and employing mathematical probabilities when he's doing so. That's our secret!

FWIW he has stayed in our local store by him self for hours painting them,and shoo'ed me away when I came to collect him.

Also, I'm secretly venting frustration at the parents of one of the kids at the club who is sooooo clearly not interested in this hobby but who keeps being ditched with us every week because if Dad can pretend DS is into it, Dad can indulge his own love of the hobby IYSWIM.

Not fair to the kid and damned annoying for us, cause he spends all his time crawling under the tables and knocking stuff off and then I have to stop the other kids from killing him.

So, yes, hide! You have my blessing. You may blame me when your DS complains. Just tell him that the nerdy lady who runs a gaming club says he should do it on his own!

I am praying that DS is into Warhammer, DnD or whatever is the equivalent when he is old enough. Many many happy afternoons spent at the Tin Soldier, painting miniatures, reading, gaming. Is there a better place for teens to be?

My DH paints these things.



Doesn't bother me really, better than being down the pub watching the footie or whatever. I painted a dwarf once to show willing, it was quite relaxing and enjoyable in a way, I wouldn't make a habit of it though.

We also once tried to play the game. We set our little armies up and rolled the dice and used the tape measure etc. After half an hour I had to break the news that it was the most boring thing I'd ever done in my life.

Still I think it's a good thing to try out new things/things the other person likes in a relationship. Next week, it's bumsex

I feel like I've stumbled into a parallel universe. What is Warhammer and DnD? I have a 5yo DS and we're just hitting Star Wars and Beast Quest, so guess I've got a few years to go yet!

Dh has given up warhammer but is still into Blood Bowl not often heard of these days as GW no longer sell the game etc.

Plus points only 16 models per team.

Minus points makes a game of Warhammer look piss easy - it's like playing chess but with the randomness of dice rolls thrown in.

I claimed pregnancy brain and stopped trying to learn.

It's a cheap hobby and only involves him escaping going away about 4 weekends per year plus one evening per week.

Biggest plus is that he pro paints, lots of his minatures are rare so they're worth ££££££s if I ever have need to sell

cargirl DH has fantasies of being good enough to make £££ but he's not there yet by any stretch. He spends his time watching tutorials and reading the forums while I MN I wish his were that good but instead they just multiply and infest the house...
