Oh god that sounds scary!

Just wondering though... I have never had mine waxed I just shave or imax when I am going on holiday and expect to be wearing a cozzie. But the thing I hate is how much it itches when it starts to grow back and is still just stubbly. Do you still get this after a wax?

No need to get drunk. The only reason I don't do it anymore is that someone has stuck this huge flappy tummy in the way, so I can't see what I'm doing. Plus a prolapse disc operation means that I no longer bend as easily.
if you can bend in a way so that you can see what you are doing and there is nothing flappy in the way then go for it.

Don't get drunk or you'll be tempted to do it all in one go and end up with horrendous bruising.

Or so I've heard

5Foot5 I had mine done at a salon before going on holiday and it was well worth it. No stubble - lasted at least a fortnight and was really smooth.

I have been doing mine for about 15 years. I have noticed that the more experienced you become (takes practice) the easier it is. Also (after a few years) it grows back far more slowly. Some people claim a couple of painkillers will take the edge of the pain off, personally I have never found the pain unbearable.

Think how much money you will save. If it's really long to start with then trim it with nail scissors. On the rare occasion I have shaved it itches, but with waxing it doesn't.

I once attempted to do mine as I worked in a salon at the time and was happy to do other peoples!

After lots of '1,2,3......nope, I can't do it's I sat in a warm bath, soaked off the strip and have continued to shave it ever since!

Dunnit!! Lots of 1,2,3-ing + rip and swear but all tidy again . Going to the salon next time tho, too traumatic!

Bit of a tip though - don't try to add more talc with cotton wool AFTER you've applied the wax. You end up looking like Father Christmas.

I've managed it for years. The microwavable stuff seems to be easier and I get a metre of cotton from the fabric shop and cut lots of small strips instead of using the huge strips that come with the pack. Can even do my own brazillian. Although I tend to 'attack' it over 2 evenings (15 mins a time) as it requires a lot of bending and crouching . Also good to trim first, waxing longer hair hurts more.

I used those cold wax strips once and it drew blood, so steer clear of them. I would go to a salon - you'll get a better result and it will be faster, and probably no more expensive than buying all the equipment to do it at home.

I always wax it myself and it does get a lot easier over the years. Trim the hair, if too long, take a couple of painkillers and away you go.

Btw, I always use cold wax strips as I find the liquid stuff really messy.

I heard a little while ago on the radio (very specific I know) that you can now buy numb cream over the counter. You know the stuff a dentist uses before they give you an injection? The radio presenter was speculating that this might make waxing a WHOLE lot better. ANyone tried it?
BTW, I find that it does itch when it grows back, but it's the in-grown hairs which finally stopped me bothering. Plus I hate that inbetween stage where it's back but it's not long enough to wax yet.

I would add that you'll get better results with hot (like salon style) wax than those ready to use cold wax strips.

Practice is everything if doing it yourself.

Salon is really worth it for speed, efficiency and convenience. Don't be shy they've seen it all before.

I did mean immac. I suppose imax would only be useful if you wanted to watch a film to take your mind off the pain - though the screaming might distract the rest of the audience.

BTW has anyone read "Sleeping Beauties" by Mavis Cheek?

There is a scene in a beauty salon where someone is getting a bikini wax and the beautician makes, shall we say, a slight mistake. The unfortunate customer experiences a sensation described as being like a rape in reverse.

DON'T DRINK FIRST!!! Alcohol thins your blood (same reason you shouldn't drink before a piercing or tattoo). If you do bruise (highly likely on your first try) it will be really bad.

Personally I always pop a codeine 20 mins before, but I am a total wus....

I bleached my hair from dark brown to blonde whilst drunk once - DH helped me.
It was hilarious how awful it looked until we sobered up the next morning and I was in tears.
My daughter was only little at the time and looked completely aghast and said "make it normal again Mummy!"
Don't do it hammered.

And if it is where we are talking about, why were you showing your DD?

I was going to a dinner party with a friend who doesn't normally wear make-up, for some reason we decided to put red lipstick on. Her 5yo and 3yo walked in a burst into tears. 'mummy what happened to your lips?' and 'does it hurt?'

I've done it for years. Liquid wax is too messy and bloody painful when you apply it when it's too hot and have no way of getting it off. I use cold strips and warm them on the radiator for a few seconds.

It's still hurts like hell, but it's only for a few seconds and worth the pain.
