I cannot believe this. Too much too soon.

OhYouBadBadKitten Fri 09-Oct-09 14:04:00

I am a giagantic Obama fan but I agree, there are people who have been working for years for peace. He can get accolades once he has done his two terms of presidency.

pushmepullyou Fri 09-Oct-09 14:05:45

I agree. He might well deserve it in future but imo hasn't had chance to earn it yet

6feetundertheGroundhogs Fri 09-Oct-09 14:06:45

Hmm, a bit quick....

He's only the President of the USA, not the Messiah!

saadia Fri 09-Oct-09 14:08:15

I was very surprised, not sure exactly what he has achieved yet for global peace.

gorionine Fri 09-Oct-09 14:09:11

I cannot open your link bb.

I suppose as fr as US presidents go he might be the one who deserves it but yes, a bit soon.

Nancy66 Fri 09-Oct-09 14:10:12

Some of the news reports are saying that even he is a bit surprised and embarrassed by it.

As one of the TV commentators said, he's effectively won it for not being George Bush.

Floopy21 Fri 09-Oct-09 14:15:03

Please could someone explain why he has been awarded it? Because he's a black US president?

merrymonsters Fri 09-Oct-09 14:16:17

I think they should have at least waited until the end of his presidency. It seems very premature to me.

Squishabelle Fri 09-Oct-09 14:17:13

I think he has been awarded it because he is black.

paisleyleaf Fri 09-Oct-09 14:20:15

I expect he feels a bit embarrassed about it himself.

LittleOneMum Fri 09-Oct-09 14:23:25

It's because they wanted to send a message that they support what he has said/does. Not particularly fussed, me, these things don't really count for much, do they? Mind you, I hope that he gives his $1 m dollars he wins to charity...

Squishabelle Fri 09-Oct-09 14:24:10

How can he feel a bit embarrassed? Arent these people approached beforehand to see if they will accept? If so he shouldnt have accepted it. Its far too early to bestow this sort of honour on him 'yet'.

The Nobel Peace Prizes are just a big old boys club of gigantic proportions........................and this proves what a heap of pointless shit the system is. Not worth the paper they are written on.

megapixels Fri 09-Oct-09 15:02:33

I really like him, but really this is rather OTT. Just give the man a chance to prove his worth for it first.

WinkyWinkola Fri 09-Oct-09 15:04:03

YANBU. Absolutely too much too soon.

marenmj Fri 09-Oct-09 16:50:15

oh FFS. At least wait til he actually CLOSES F-ING GUANTANAMO.

gorionine Sat 10-Oct-09 07:50:50

Good point marenmj!

robino Sat 10-Oct-09 08:03:56

YANBU. Agree, too much too soon and others far more deserving. I just hope that, as has been claimed, he knew nothing of it before he was awarded it. If that is the case then I think the Nobel committee have put him in an embarassing situation. I'm beginning to wonder if he should have turned it down regardless.

robino Sat 10-Oct-09 08:07:11

And did you hear the actual timing of it all? Nominations for the prize closed on something like the 1st February and he was only inaugurated on 20th January (sorry, those are approximate dates). Anyhoo, he'd only been in office a matter of days when the nominations closed which makes the whole thing seem like utter madness.

overmydeadbody Sat 10-Oct-09 08:10:15

YANBU It is ridiculous really and diminishes the prwstige of nobel peace prizes somewhat.

overmydeadbody Sat 10-Oct-09 08:14:37

Really Squirel?sad
