to think that supermarket etiquette works like this

in a busy supermarket like Sainsburys on a saturday, you finish shopping and join a horribly long queue.

Suddenly you remember something which happens to be in the next aisle along, so you leave your trolley in the queue and dash to get said item.

When you come back you expect your trolley to be in the same place and not to have been moved to the side and an old bloke with a basket in front of you starting to unload his basket.

Shopping etiquette says you wait your turn right even if the owner of the trolley in front is not there for a couple of minutes.

Depends. If the assistant was ready to start with the next customer, he was right to go ahead.

I said "Oh" quite pointedly and he said "oh I didn't see you, anyway I don't have much" - he had about the same as me.

I left it but had an internal dialogue about Karma and etiquette and basic good manners and choosing to make the world nicer or nastier rather than thinking of your own convenience - which luckily I didn't start on because in my pmt state it would have escalated - oh yes indeed it would have

and then I gave the bloke behind me my nectar points and was nice to till woman so my karma is intact

dogonpoints there was about 10cm of free conveyor belt space at the end of it behind the lady in front who had only just finished unloading - he could barely fit a separator on it and he hadn't started unloading when I reappeared from the next aisle with my Alpen

ruddynorah he wasn't behind me when I left to get the cereal - he was probably walking up the line looking for the smallest queue - but my trolley was immediately behind the lady in fronts and over the till entrance

When I was in UK, I never came across this.

If I forgot something I would take my trolley with, or move it to the side out of the way.

If I left my trolley, in a queue I wouldn´t expect someone else to move it on!

Here in Germany if you forget something you ask the person behind, you don´t expect it.

It´s also usual here to let a person with a couple of items in their arms to go before you.

I think YABU to epect this,and to think that ther is even such a thing as "supermarket etiquette"

YANBU. You weren't delaying anyone by your behaviour because the person in front was still putting their shopping through. Although I would have said to the person behind 'I'm just going ot run and get something'.

If I was next inline, I´m not sure that I would stand like a twit behind a trolley when I could be putting my stuff on!!

They were not ready for the next person - there was about 10cm of conveyor space behind the person's being served shopping that had opened up whilst I had been gone.

There was nobody behind me to ask when I nipped off so I left my trolley across the end of conveyor belt as you do

what would be rude is if - you did half your shopping - put your trolley in the queue and then came back with a basket full of more stuff

that would be rude

but having stood in a long queue for 10 mins then remember that you need tampons - its not the end of the world - or indeed taking up anyones time past say ONE minute if they dash off and pick up a box -

what pisses me off is old ladies paying the exact money "just a minute i have a 2p somewhere....ooh a penny....there you are....i KNOW i have another penny................................

I wouldn't do what he did, but I get very irritated by people who vanish and leave their shopping behind without saying a word. Particularly hated it when I worked on the checkouts, and had to wait for people to finish their shopping and wander back, thus making me and everyone else in the queue wait (which isn't what you did I know, but speaking generally). The odd times I have had to do it, I always check if people mind first, and leg it as fast as possible...

I'll fully admit though that I am over sensitive to it because of the cheeky gets who do use it as a method to 'save their place' in the queue, when they damn well know they still have shopping to do...
