AIBU?

Why pink seems to be the only 'girly' colour?

It so annoys me that I can't get 'girly' toys for my DD that are not pink. I wanted to buy little moses basket for her doll and they only come in pink.
My doughter doesn't have colour preferences yet(only 16 mnth old) so it should be up to me- and i would like her to like all the colours. Don't want my house to turn into 'pink princess land' (but obviously it will be up to her when she is older) so I don't want to encourage her to choose pink BUT IT SEEMS THAT SOMEBODY MADE THAT CHOICE FOR US!!!! It drives me mad!!!! Can't little girls love green or orange or blue?

YABU - you should be buying her a builders hat and tools, not a moses basket LOL

Pretty sure I've seen pink hard hats somewhere.

I'd like to buy my little son a toy buggy, but I can only find them in pink - a colour I can't stand! It must be so infuriating for mums of girls, even when buying clothes etc. Just a sea of pink in every shop!

The only other colour that seems to be offered for girls is a yukky pale lilac colour.

Even the early learning centre, which isn't usually so gender specific, offers only 2 designs of painting apron - bright pink and flowery or blue with slugs and snails (eewww)!

It's ELC that made me most mad recently - i didn' notice it was so gender specyfic 5 years ago when ds was little! we were buying really colouful stuff there
now it's all either pink or blue

It is a "this is the girl one, and this is the boy one", and your right, ELC are the worst - even things like paddling pools! Just a crappy clever marketing ploy to make you go our and buy different things when you then have a baby of a different gender!

Its only the past 3 years that ELC has gone mad on pink and blue, apparantly customer demand.
I personally prefered the purple and lime green colours that we used to sell.
Its a nightmare stock wise, try having to explain for the 30th time that day that the reason the pink sandpits are on offer and not the blue ones is because we have several thousand more pink ones in the warehouse and they are not selling as well as blue. Drives me potty. And of course... its all my fault.

Sorry turned your pink thread into my own personal rant there, ive calmed down now!

CuppateaJanice I managed to find a mini red buggy in Mothercare. It's a Graco branded one - cost about a fiver. DS loves it! He had a habit of trying to nick other kids baby buggies if we were out and about so I thought I'd indulge him.

At the weekend I observed that the ELC even sell two versions of a GLOBE.

One, as you may imagine. The other with pink continents and pink seas. I told my DN that that wasn't representing Earth.

the boxes featured pink sparkly girls playing with the pink globe

and boys learning from the real one

Early Learning Centre indeed

Toys r Us has a good range of blue toys for boys - DS has a blue buggy and baby from there. Not cos I especially wanted blue but the pink ones were so girly I wouldn't have wanted them for my daughter let alone my son!!

The pink thing is hideous - don't know what tis to be done about it .

I have a pink tommee tippee cup for my DS (it was last one in shop, no big deal) and when I gave it to him yesterday one of the mums we were with made such a fuss of a boy drinking out of a pink cup - WTF?!!

at the globe! That is crazy!

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

You'd think ELC would realise that maybe customers don't want pink stuff if they've got loads left in the warehouse and they're not selling!! Come on Ferret, sort your bosses out!!!!

You see - there's all of us not liking pink, hateing pink or simply wanting other colours - wy shops don't care about costumers like us - are we such minority?

I am one of you!
I even scoured ebay until I found a red fairy dress when DD was 2, so she didn't have a sparkly uber-girly pink one.

My DS has a pink paddling pool, pink cash register, pink watergun and pink lawnmower.
All because when it came to buying these items the Blue/generic versions were out of stock. He is 2 and a half he doesnt give a toss about what colour it is.
Saying that though im pregnant with DC2 and sonographer says she thinks its a girl and im reluctant to buy pink things for her!
So im not against pink just the gender assignment of the colour.
And yes ive tried many times telling the bosses via surveys etc that we dont want pink/blue toys but they dont listen to mere sales assistants such as myself.
