"are you sure it's not Merlot?" I giggled. Dd was very angry.

Megglevache Tue 22-Sep-09 21:14:42

Awwww I bet it seems terribly exotic to her.

I thought the same when I met a Maxine when I was 6 grin
I bet her friend is called Shaz really grin

easylife73 Tue 22-Sep-09 21:19:57

There was a kid at my school when I was growing up who had a sister called Ariel. We used to tease her mercilessly asking if her brother was called can be cruel...

BikeRunSki Tue 22-Sep-09 21:21:00

Maybe it is Shanaz? I went to school with a very sensible Shanaz (may have spelling wrong) and believe it to be a genuine Asian name.

cariboo Tue 22-Sep-09 21:26:46

dd doesn't even know what Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc are so my wit stupid joke was wasted.

SixtyFootDoll Tue 22-Sep-09 21:27:20

Sheraz is I think an Asian name.
( it was my original MN name, a play on Shiraz - so know that when I googled it)

Zoya Tue 22-Sep-09 21:28:42

Shiraz is a fairly standard Muslim name - and given that, it might be as well to be careful with the jokes about alcohol, not everyone will be as amused by your witticism as you evidently were.

cariboo Tue 22-Sep-09 21:31:01

oh dear!

GeekIsGood Tue 22-Sep-09 21:32:30

Zoya I don't think Muslims are offended by the very existence of alcohol.

TrillianAstra Tue 22-Sep-09 21:32:35

That's much less funny now 60ftdoll! You've ruined the fun of snobbiness grin

COuld be wrose, could be CharDONNaaaaay.

cariboo Tue 22-Sep-09 21:33:55

cariboo Tue 22-Sep-09 21:37:05

Not snobbishness, honestly! It's not as if it were Chardonnay, as you saaaaay. It was just a little jokelette that I thought I'd share. I knew some ol' sobersides would have a go at me, which is half the fun of posting on AIBU.grin

Zoya Tue 22-Sep-09 21:38:13

No of course not GIG, but if someone got the impression that cariboo KNEW it was a Muslim name and was deliberately making a joke about it being an alcoholic drink, that would get a very stony response where I live. I don't think for a moment that you intended anything bad btw cariboo. And actually if you've never come across the name, I guess there probably aren't many Muslims in your neck of the woods... OK ignore me I'll put down the shovel!

lavenderkate Tue 22-Sep-09 21:39:31

ROFL genuinely grin

HerBeatitude Tue 22-Sep-09 21:40:06

No I would have larfed too.

I do hope she doesn't grow up to be an alcoholic, that would be awful wouldn't it?

thinking about it, there must surely be a generation growing up who are now reaching an age where alcoholism begins, among whom are more than a sprinkling of Chardonnay's?

SixtyFootDoll Tue 22-Sep-09 21:40:08

Sorry Trill!

SixtyFootDoll Tue 22-Sep-09 21:40:24

Sorry Trill!

lavenderkate Tue 22-Sep-09 21:41:20

oh zoya it's ok to laugh occasionally.

Everyone is SO hypersensitive and PC these days.

GeekIsGood Tue 22-Sep-09 21:43:28

Put it down slowly and walk awaay Zoya smile

I did not know it was a Muslim name either anyway, so YANBU! Would have thought 'better than Chardonnay but not as exotic sounding as Valpolicella'

lavenderkate Tue 22-Sep-09 21:44:59

Valpolicella pmsl !

cariboo Tue 22-Sep-09 21:45:15

Lots of muslims, christians, jews, buddhists, 7th day adventists, etc around our neck of the woods what with the UN just down the road.

cariboo Tue 22-Sep-09 21:54:44

thanks ladies! beginning to think IABU...grin

(staggers off to bed waving empty Beaujolais bottle)

SixtyFootDoll Tue 22-Sep-09 21:56:50
