I find myself tuning out when my 14 yr old launches into an explanation about anything. he thinks I'm like, well mean, and I, like, never listen to a word she sez. I'm like talk to the hand luv cos the ear aint listenin.

We play a game with our kids called the yes/no game where they have to answer a series of questions without using the words yes or no. They're well-practised by now and there's no catching them out. However, recently we changed the rules to them having to explain something in detail without using 'like' and 'you know.' Hopeless. I thought we had two articulate kids, but they were bloody awful at it.

Heard a linguist talking about this on R4 once, apparently its a unique part of speech, not quite a hesitation or tic,nor a comparison but sort of for organising yr thoughts. wish i could remember. it sounded, like,convincing at the time

I always thought that the use of the word "like" as a hedging word was the ultimate evidence of an ingrained lack of personal responsibility and low self esteem resulting in the inability to commit to the idea that your opinion is actually your opinion and not just something like your opinion.

But, like, that's just me.

It was very interesting but alas, I cannot remember enough to explain it well.

Well I'm still not sure I've understood it correctly, but Emo is short for 'emotional'. They wear grungy clothes and listen to a particular type of music, but they're not quite the same as Goths. Not quite as 'dark'.Something like that anyway [hmmm]

My 16 year old niece starts every sentence with 'oh my god' and uses the word 'totally' all the time too.
