Colleague getting married next month. We were discussing the preparation for his wedding this morning and I was completely horrified at what he and his fiance are paying. Getting married in an orangery in a big house - reception in one of the other buildings on the site. They are paying £950 for the use of the place (not including the fee for the registrar and the marriage certificate). £21 a head for stand-up buffet and £4.50 a head for a glass of bucks fizz at the reception. In October? AIBU to be shocked at that! OK I got married 17 yrs ago but even so..... twas a lovely do in just as nice a place.

So glad parents don't have to pay for their DD's weddings anymore

my best friend had a 26K wedding... and although it was lovely, it seemed a bit expensive to us! Their's was in october, in a nice hotel, everything in the same room, sit down meal then an evening buffet.

we've set a budget of 6 K for ours, but we're planning to marry overseas (in my DP's country) which is a bit cheaper than here. but wedding prices now are extortionate so far as I can tell!

26K?

I can only assume that some people are prepared to shut their eyes and open their wallets when it comes to weddings.

However as I am invited to the evening do I am not complaining

Can they not provide their own bucks fizz? This is why I got married for £37.50 in a small room

Well precisely irish But I guess they can't as it's a catered venue. But 4.50 for a glass of orange juice and fizzy wine!

plain mad.

it is not how much you spend that matters, but that you have a nice day with the people you want to share the day with, and the promises you both make

I do not understand that. 1000s of pounds on a wedding. What? Mine was overseas but cost about 2.5k which was a hell of a lot to us! (including my dress and all)

my cousin got married last wed

they paid £10k for the hire of the house alone.

the registrar, caterers all on top.

guests then had to pay for their rooms in the house that had already been hired, and again caterers brought in for breakfast the next day.
