to think a DS should last longer than 10 months?

Hi everyone, can't find the existing thread so here goes again. The hinge on my DS DS(!) has broke so it just flops open. I bought it in November and have still the receipt from Game Online. Took it into my local shop today, thinking they would change it as its still under a year old. No, the wouldn't - as the DS still works its the hardware that is broken, they wouldn't change it. Said it's been handled roughly!!!! Told me to contact customer services. Any advice people. It hasn't been dropped, my son isn't rough with it, its simply got a broken hinge. Surely they are required to change it???

Have to say when you said DS in title I thought you meant your son so was dead confused! Try the manufacturer.....

crikey - wasn't sure what sort of thread this was going to be....!

Have you tried contacting customer services as the shop suggested? I would have thought they should repair/replace as appropriate.

"I thought you meant your son so was dead confused!"

I would like to re-order that sentence to mean what I thought of the title:

I thought you meant your son was dead. So confused!

Sorry, should be doing other stuff instead of MN and am late going somewhere, so not making much sense at the moment! Having read it back, you're right - it doesn't really make sense! Almost as confusing as the original title....

I thought the same, Trillian. I would have cared about the OPs son, but I don't give two hoots about a games console.

i have had 2 DS systems break at the hinge

It is obviously a weak area that needs sorting out

we had a broken hinge after 6 months and got a replacement case and its still going strong. We thought that the plastic might have got affected by the heat, or else DD got a bit too rough with it

Who do you contact about getting it replaced>? My dd's ds hinge has broken too I thought we would just have to live with it.

They do break if you drop them. I guess they are not really kiddie proofed enough to be able to drop.

However, we got the hard plastic case that goes on them (cheap in Argos) and ours has been dropped, thrown, and skidding accross the pavement as is still fine. Get one of you can!

I've learnt my lesson on this one and pay approx. £15 extra to get the insurance for 2/3 years (can't remember exact length of time).

I have 4 DSs and we tend to get through a DS every 6 months. The hinge broke on one after 3 months and they have managed to pull one apart whilst fighting over it. Gamestation just swap them over for me and I purchase another insurance.

Call customer services. They are often more reasonable than the shop. May be that Nintendo are saying all hardware faults need to go through them, may be that the store manager just didn't want the hassle? Game online operate at the same building that the customer services are based. I worked there for a bit and some stores are better than others tbh.

Success! Rang Customer Services who were very helpful, unlike the store, told me to go to the store and get it changed. Store still weren't very happy about it, but exchanged it! Hooray!

I too thought your son had died until I opened the thread.

DS should last longer than 10 months without a doubt.

And so should sons if all goes well!

Glad they helped SingleMum01 - the number of times I would have to mediate between a manager and the customer hmm
