what paper was this in?

JodieO Tue 08-Sep-09 10:00:49

Probably the daily fail.

This was talked about yesterday. Most people thought teachers shouldn't be taken part in daft, divisive un-scientific surveys.

TheDMshouldbeRivened Tue 08-Sep-09 10:02:04

chavs and pikies hmm

Wasn't this some Bounty sponsored survey??

What is it with the UK and its obsession with class and benefits???

3000 opinions out of a population of 60 million - I don't think so ...

You used some pretty emotive, derogative terminolgy in your posting which IMHO doesn't make it a discussion ...

Isn't pikey a really horrible racist term for Irish travellers? I've never heard it used in any other way...

Ineedmorechocolatenow Tue 08-Sep-09 10:23:53

Bloody hell....

I've been teaching over 10 years and have had my fair share of revolting girls. I've taught some revolting Emmas and Charlottes in my time (some gorgeous ones too), and some lovely Courtneys and Caseys. It's all a load of tosh.......

I read this in the Metro this morning. They had list for "worst behave", "most popular" and "highest achievers". Some of the names were on all 3 lists (like Jack and Charlie) from memory so not sure how much it can be relied upon. Interestingly, I don't think there was any overlap on the lists of girls' names, so I guess that people have stronger associations with many girls' names than boys' names.

Who made this list, Father Christmas

AxisofEvil Tue 08-Sep-09 10:31:16

The whole name/behaviour collelation isn't new. My mum taught and I remember her saying her heart would sink when she came across classes with high numbers of particular names as they tended (tended mind, not definitely were) to be worse behaved. Freakonomics has some interesting stuff on babies names and how the socioeconomic groups using particular names changes in time.

Love, you weren't doing too badly until the sarcasm kicked in ("We have 60 million teachers in the UK now then do we?").
Now I think you're just being rude....

SolidGoldBrass Tue 08-Sep-09 10:40:24

I wouldn't trust a survey like that anyway: it depends on subjectivity and class prejudice (people do not call children 'Chardonnay', the name is a parody). Bad behaviour covers a huge range - is the 'naughty' child the noisy one, the one with ADHD or the sophisticated little sociopath whose particular talent is dropping other kids in it? Which 'bad' behaviours were being assessed here? And how many of the teachers had the full range of social classes in their schools anyway and were not just making assumptions about the type of children they don't ever see?

I read this - there was a short thread on 'in the news.' Certainly it doesn't take a genius to work out that the subtext is that middle class children are better behaved.

Still think it's bad taste though. I'm sure most 4/5 year olds are naughty given half a chance whether they're Hugo or Lambrini.
