Driving back home from soft play with my nearly 4yo dd strapped safely in the back and my dear sis in law in the front. Was negotiating a horrible roundabout, being careful to get in right lane etc.....took the wrong exit and ended up on a dual carrigeway having to drive 2 miles before I could turn round !

In a bit of a flap becuase of this, went round roundabout on outside lane, so went onto dcway on the outside lane & was picking up speed to move over to inside.....looked in rear view mirror to see a complete arsehole right up my tail end - you know the type, boy racer who thinks he owns the road. Drove a bit further, accelerated a bit - so did he, so still right up my arse. Instinctively, to protect dd (as she cops it first if anyone goes into the back of me) went to pull into inside lane to let lunatic boy racer past, didn't see car coming up in my blind spot and nearly had a crash -just managed to swerve back into outside lane in time to avoid nasty accident.

Shaking like a leaf, dd crying, sis in law turned a funny shade of green - managed to pull over into inside lane when clear - only to see boy racer overtake me, look me straight in the eyes and LAUGH AT ME!!! What a lowlife - he nearly caused me to crash and kill us all and he has the audacity to laugh. What a f'ing b*d!!!!!!!!

I know I should have been more careful and sure it was safe to pull over, but I was in sheer panic that at any minute this t
t was going to shunt me from behind, he was that close. It makes me so mad when people do that, especially when it's obvious there's a child in the back (the seat can be seen above the window). Why are bloke drivers such knobheads?

Phew, just needed to vent.x.

Oh poor you. I had a crash in April it was horrid, the other driver was a bit boy racer, but it was partly my fault anyway.

I HATE idiots who drive so close behind. I have become paranoid since my crash and now if I have an idiot behind me, I just concentrate on driving as carefully as poss, while slowly slowing down.

you poor thing. A tailgating royal mail van went into the back of me when DS was 5 weeks old - the dread I felt was horrible

What a horrid experience. Hope you're feeling better now. What a lowlife, laughing at you! Can't believe even a racer boy would be that callous

I hate it when people drive right up my tail. Once I had this huge articulated vehicle so close behind me I could only see part of the grille in my rear window . I just kept thinking that if I had to brake suddenly then it would be my car that would be pate smeared on the tarmac. Just how much of a hurry are they in exactly? Stupid turds!

why screaming? I think everyone hates tailgaters, apart from tailgaters! I suffer from very little road rage, forgive people for pulling out in front of me and cutting me up, get irrtated if they're driving slowly in front of me but realise it's my problem, but I'd love to line up tailgaters and shoot them all in the head.

Why doesn't someone invent a camera mounted on the rear of a car that automatically takes a photo of any object closer than some distance if you're moving at more than some speed (I'm not sure what the appropriate parameters would be. Obv dist would be related to speed). It would be positioned so as to capture the number plate.

And ideally it would be admissable as evidence of dangerous driving by the tailgater.

Topsy - what goes around comes around, one day this little twat will have someone torment him, put him under pressure and then laugh at him just as he did to you, and then he'll know how it feels.

I'm sending you a big big hug [big big hug]

Stealth yes, it was something along those lines .......

I just hope that people who drive like this hurt themselves, and learn a lesson, before they get a chance to hurt someone else

I know exactly how you feel, the other day I was in the outside lane when a bloke who was smoking, on his phone and had a clipboard on the steering wheel tried to cut me up, I had to swerve and he grinned at me as he went past. I had my mum and both kids in the car and I thought, 'if you had made me crash and hurt my family I would have found you and KILLED you!' I really meant it too! (generally I'm a pretty placid type). How dare these people take risks with other people's lives?

I just don't understand people who drive like that. Are they so arrogant that they believe they are immune to road accidents? Do they not care that they could hurt or kill other people?

I'm afraid I wish accidents on people I see speeding crazily/tailgating me/cutting me up. Not fatal of course, and nobody else involved, but enough to teach them a lesson/send them to jail.

I really lost it one night with one tailgater, let him overtake and watched him do the same to the person in front. So I tailgated him. Wouldn't normally act like this but was soooo angry. I couldn't actually see out my rear view mirror he was so close. Anyway, result was he backed off the person in front and so I backed off from him. Result

But bloody terrified doing it and haven't dared since (over 15 years ago).

Curious to know...has anyone ever been tailgated by a woman? I don't believe I have.

Report
BigGobMum · 21/08/2009 20:27

Grimma - yes I have although its mostly men who do this. Dd is learning to drive and I am angry at how much she has been tailgated just because she was going slowly.

I was tailgated by a national express coach yesterday and it made me so mad with my little ones in the car.

A few months ago I was harrassed by someone driving a highways agency van so I phoned and complained.

GrimmaTheNome - got serious amounts of abuse on the M40 yesterday from a woman driving a horsebox cos I'd slowed down to let someone join the motorway. The only alternative would have been to speed up and he'd have probably crashed into her as she was behind me.

Can't imagine why you would be driving up someone's arse with animals in the back - I'd have thought that was an obvious reason for leaving plenty of room. I wouldn't do that with passengers as it's so unpleasant if you have to break sharply so I make sure I don't have to!

I was driving on a country road behind a tractor with a bit of traffic building behind me. As soon as it was safe to (not long, just a few minutes) I started to overtake the tractor. As I was overtaking, the car behind me over took me and the tractor at once!! The driver and passengers all were laughing and jeering at me as they passed. All it would have taken was one of us to have a slight speed wobble and the lot of us could have been killed. I didn't get the reg as they drove off like a hot snot before I could. I can't understand the mentality of anyone who would put their own lives and the lives of others at risk for the sake of a quick thrill.

I have by a woman in a very residential area - she was trying to go faster than my (too fast really) 25mph (is middle of housing estate). So, I braked. She so very nearly crashed into the back of me that this caused her to completely freak out at me, sounding her horn, hitting her steering wheel, swearing her head of. I set off again verrrrrrrrrrry slowly until she kept a safe distance. She tried to overtake so I stopped again. She was Hpping mad! I was

People twitched their curtains at all the fuss.

When DS2 was very small I was in the middle of a very severe depression. I had just dropped DS1 at school and was heading home through quiet residential area. Turned out at a junction only to have a boy racer come screaming up behind me, massively exceeding the speed limit , right on my tail and blaring his horn for me to get out of the way.
I completely lost it , oulled up and got out of the car. As the raod was residential with cars parked either side he couldn't get past me and started to get out of his car to confront me.
As I have long suspected he was a little streak of piss making up for his inadequacies behind the wheel of a car.
I must have looked demented because as I approached him asking him what he thought he was doing he backed away and mumbled. I wouldn't let it go though and refused to move until he had admitted he was an idiot and apologised and would have stayed there all day I think. By now he had cars behind him so no where to go and he had ( wisely) wound up his window and was gesturing a bit helplessly at me.

He apologised for being stupid and i got back in my car and drove off.

Of course it was a staggeringly stupid thing for me to do - but all thses years later I can see the funny side.

Boy racer forced to apologised by slightly demented woman of a certain age
