AIBU?

...to think DH is being an arse about my dental bill??

So I broke a tooth off yesterday, right down to the gum, and it's very close to front of my mouth.

Went to dentist today and she has managed to crown it thus saving the tooth.

Paid half today and the other half is due in 2 weeks when I have the proper crown fixed on.

He asked how much, I told him.

He is now pissing and whining about the whole thing, "that's too expensive", "only fucking millionaires pay that for teeth" etc etc

So I ponit out that the ONLY other option was to have an extraction, what does he want me to walk around with a visible hole in my mouth.

Wouldn't mind but he spend best part of 70 quid a week on fags and beer so in my mind he really doesn't have cause to moan how I spend money.

He going on about it like I'm spending money on luxuries for myself.........whereas I see it as essential work that HAD to be done.

Who's right, who's wrong??

YANBU! At all! You broke your tooth? What did he expect you to do?

Go and break all his fags!

You are right, of course you are. It must have hurt though

Fourtunatly it didn't hurt at all because I had already had a root canal in that tooth, lol.

It is like any other accident eg something dying on the car etc. A total pita but you have to cough up. But it is your tooth not his and it is natural to feel slightly peeved at any accident that leaves you out of pocket. I'd be peeved at having to fork out for a crown. He is probably just peeved at the situation and not you.

Ow, ow, ow, ow!

YANBU - you are too young to be looking like a guest on Jeremy Kyle.

Out of interest, how much is this all going to cost?

yanbu. Teeth are hardly a bloody luxury!

Told him "well I haven't had beer for 2 months so I'll spend my money on this instead" (not that I drank beer before either, just making a point)

My DH also appears to be under the illusion that fags (I don't smoke) and beer (don't drink all that much) are considered essential items.

He spends £70 a week on fags and beer??? I am speechless. That is truly shocking - unless he is so rich that it is a negligable amount of his income - in which case he had no right to moan about your (very necessary) dental treatment.

YANBU, the cost of dentists however is VVVU. I can't understand why if you break a leg it's fixed for free but if you break a tooth it's so damn expensive

Report
BrieVanDerKamp · 19/08/2009 22:29

no no no 70 is a lot for us to spend a week on that sort of thing

Of course you had to have your tooth fixed. If you'd had an extraction you'd have then had to have some sort of false tooth arrangement - that would all have cost too and probably been crap.

My attitude to teeth is like Lady Muck's - I spend less having my teeth serviced and fixed than my car. I need both in good working order.

YANBU - DH VVU

£514? Wow. I've not long had a crown replaced on a tooth I broke years ago and it was far less than that - on the NHS, though, assume yours was private?

Still, dh is BVVVVU, what does he expect you to do?

Report
BrieVanDerKamp · 19/08/2009 22:34

yes i've very recently gone private, simply because my nhs dentist just wouldn't do any work at all beside's extractions and fillings and I did need some root canals,

very glad I changed when I did cos old dentist would just have taking it out no questions asked

And no, it isn't only millionaires who pay that for teeth. Its anyone (ie most of us) without NHS dentist who breaks a tooth.

You can get dental insurance for a family of 4 for around £30 a month. Perhaps he should put some of his fag and beer money towards that.

I wish I could afford £70 a week on luxuries.

It is well nigh impossible to get dental care on the NHS anywhere these days.

BrieVanDerKamp · 19/08/2009 22:37

oh edam it was a post crown also which cost's a bit more than just a crown, from waht I can gather it's practically an implant so actually I was quite pleased with the price. Just happy not to have a whacking great gap tbh

Some dental insurance isn't worth the paper its written on though. We had rubbish experience of Denplan and decided it was better to brush, floss and pay as needed!
