Despite coating DS2 (age 8) in factor 50 sun block, and getting him to put on a T-shirt after swimming he now has a very red back I have now coated him in after sun and he says it is not hurting but I feel so guilty.

Sun block is in date, water proof, we were only out 4 hours and we are in Cornwall not Jamaica, and I did re-apply it.

Nope - happened to me last week too. Must be the cornwall sun. Poor ginger DS1(6) has a big red swipe mark where I've obviously not been thorough enough and missed a bit. Both DS's have tan necks too - their long hair makes it hard to rub in cream is my excuse. My mum was not impressed by my mothering skills

When buying sun cream always look at the star rating on the back as well as the factor - boots soltan is good and is always a 5 star rating compared with e.g. nivea which is the same factor (50) but only a 4 star rating.

It happens to us all. Just got to be carefull with rocks as the sun bounces up and still tans you when you are in the shade.
In the shade on grass is the best, but Cornwall is not for that is it?
Hope the red fades fast, just apply lots of after-sun to help it heal.

Not your fault, what sunblock did you use, name and shame it I say.

I always use Asda's own brand factor 50 for kids, it's 5 star too and about £10 cheaper than Nivea and other branded ones.

I know that my DC getting red was my comeuppance for judging today whilst I sat on the beach.

A family came along, put up a tenty thing. They had 2 DC about 5 and 7 years old. Both wore those head to foot anti-sun outfits, both had large hat on and even bigger sunglasses. No skin was left uncovered. They were placed inside the tent thingy to play. Digging in the sand by poking covered arm out of tenty thing.

And boy did I judge. I said to my friend about how ludicrous it was to go to such an extreme. Poor children must have been boiling hot inside there. I thought and said that a bit of high factor cream and a play in the sun before covering up would not have done any harm as we were doing.

And lo, we get home with all 5 of our DC plus ourselves rather red.

KIMI - you didn't fuck up. Sometimes these things happen. You applied suncream, kept him in the shade, etc etc - you did all you could. If DS says it isn't hurting, it probably isn't, and by tomorrow morning the redness will probably have gone away.

For the future, Boots Soltan Once is very good - apply it 2 or 3 times a day (more if swimming). None of us has burned since switching to this brand

We have thrown the sunblock towel in and now she wears a long sleeve surfer rashie. Factor 50 and no sticky mess. She uses it to play out in too.

They are the biz, but can feel cold if they are wet. The real good quality ones dry in quick time.

IMHO Ultrasun is the best: a single application one like Boots' SOltan Once, but I think better.

I bought some Once last year when John Lewis didn't have any Ultrasun in sotck and I couldn't be sure of getting the Ultrasun at the airport. Whenever I used the Once, I got burnt - but didn't have a problem with the Ultrasun.

Also Proderm mousse is very good - one application lasts for 6 hours (less if swimming though). DDs have used it for years and have never once burned when using it. Only downside is that you have to order it online but delivery is usually free and VERY quick!
