Hey all....

My friend has a 6week old son this is her first and I am 5days over due with my first....
So we've been close through out our pregnancy's, discussing everything...

But she has started feeding her 6WEEK OLD SON baby food already
I am worried for his health but she wouldn't listen to me when I was ''telling her off'' she just says ''well he's a hungry baby !''

Baby's are not ment to be fed food until at least 6months !
we had the same midwife as one another....
I am seeing her on Monday, do you think i should tell our midwife about what she is doing?
I am really worried about his health......

Help please !

xx

Yes, do tell the midwife, maybe she can have a chat with your friend and point out quite how mad this is.

Jesus - 6 weeks!

I don't know that I could tell the midwife.

Surely a baby that young can't even swallow baby food?

Is this for real? Seems so outlandish.

What is she feeding him? that rice stuff, or jars/ pureed stuff.

I really don't know how you should go forward. I do think it should come from a professional, but should you tell on her...methinks no. Perhaps really encourage her to discuss it with her midwife...?

Poor baby. 6 weeks is a classic time for a growth spurt is it not? Either way there's no way he should be eating baby food.

point out that jars of food are labelled from 4 - 6 months, not weeks

i would not be able to bite my tongue

that is really, really dangerous

feeding a newborn food other than milk can, rarely, but sometimes be fatal

too much salt and too much protein can overload the kidneys etc

on whose advice is she doing this?

a hungry baby needs milk milk and more milk

it is very sad she is doing this

People do, once upon a time six weeks was the recomended age for weaning.

It is considered best to wait for 6mo at the moment but not everyone does.

You could ask her very gently if she is aware that it might not be very good for his digestive system and may be linked to allergies.

But at the end of the day it is her baby and her choice, it's not ideal, but it's not going to kill him either.

Is this a wind-up? Even stupid women don't start until 12wks.
Can a 6wk old baby even swallow food?

My DH had his first solids (custard!) when he was 5 days' old in hospital. He is absolutely fine.

Obviously it is not a good thing to do but I don't think it is the end of the world.

Do you think reporting her to your HV is going to help? if she won't listen to you, do you think she will appreciate being "reported"?

actually, there has been the odd case where a a little baby has died from eating unsuitable food

Your friend has probably been discharged from the midwife's care by now. Even so I would probably still say something (to the MW - she might know the relevant health visitor and might mention the issue). I know very little about the health implications of what your friend is doing, but imagine that the guidelines say 6 months for a good reason.

Tell the midwife, then tell your friend you mentioned it as a question to see if you should be doing the same.

Hmmm, but the op has said baby food, so I am guessing, baby rice, or first stage fruit puree, rather than Weetabix ot mushed up adult food.

I may be wrong, maybe she's started him on Greggs sausage rolls.......

LOL MRC!

I would definitely speak to the midwife about it, she will perhaps ask the HV to give her more advice and support.

I weaned my DS when he was 15 weeks, but he was 6 weeks early so 9 weeks corrected age on the advise of my HV as he was a hungry baby. Wish I hadn't though! He has food issues (no allergies). This was 8 years ago, he was my first and prem and I stupidly took the advice of the near to retirement HV.

Yes this is for real im afraid

Well she says he's really hungry, even though she has put up his feeds....
Even though the Health Visitor told her not too...

I just find this really irresponsable and don't know what to do.... I have tried speaking to her ....
Her mum doesn't seem to mind that she is doing this either
So i dont know what to do...
I dont want her to get into troiuble but i care about her son so am in limbo

It is an unwise choice, but it's not really any of your business is it?

It's not abusive just badly informed.

LuluMaman · 01/08/2009 17:54

surely increasing the amount of milk he is given at each feed is far, far better and safer than giving food??

I think that he mum doesn't mind is the reason she is doing it, IFSWIM....she is trusting her mum over everybody else.

You pobably discover her mum fed her "solids" at 6 weeks.

What is she actually giving him?

Is she spooning it in? Presumably it is still very runny - otherwise it wouldn't actually go down.

Years ago I saw babys at 4 months gagging on food there mums were trying to get down them, so am curious as to how anything more than liquid will go down a tiny baby. It must me taking her ages!

I would mention it to the midwife - as plimple sugests.

Aboput 10 years ago a baby died after being fed ready break, as it had too much salt in it.

Princess - I'm not sure about 6 weeks...I think my mum weaned me at 12 weeks in the early 70's.

Admit it is anecdotal , I remember it from this thread.

Really the 'baby being weaning at 6 weeks ' is a fairly common theme.

Its baby food as in rice etc....

He can hardly bring up his wind...
You can see its really really difficult for him, i dont know if this is just how he is or if it is because she has him on baby food but I feel so sorry for him....
I dont want to be a bad friend, i just hope he doesnt get ill over it all and me feeling very guilty because I never told anyone

I know someone who fed their 5 week old baby rice so I'm not people who think it's OK are not going to be swayed by govt guidelines etc as someone else said they were probably given food at 5 weeks too and they are OK so the guidelines must be wrong right?
