Ah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are children going to be damaged by knowing these 'technical terms'........I don't think so!!

ComeOVeneer Mon 20-Jul-09 19:14:10

I think it would be better if they learnt it as "vagnia" tbh wink!

brimfull Mon 20-Jul-09 19:14:15

well they should know how to spell it right

vagina

or foufou

LaurieFairyCake Mon 20-Jul-09 19:14:41

er no, they're not.

And it's good practise.

Chevre Mon 20-Jul-09 19:14:57

or vulva if you wish to be anatomically correct

Tambajam Mon 20-Jul-09 19:15:02

I don't think so either. My 4 yr old has always said penis. I'm thinking of going with vulva with my almost 20 month old rather than vagina as we'll usually be talking about the external bits. Haven't finally decided though.

Tortington Mon 20-Jul-09 19:15:43

brimfull Mon 20-Jul-09 19:16:21

cunt?

hercules1 Mon 20-Jul-09 19:16:40

I was told off by an adult on mumsnet recently for calling my breasts "breasts" and a penis a "penis". APparently I should be calling them "tits" and "cock"!Seriously!

chegirl Mon 20-Jul-09 19:21:46

Nothing wrong with it at all. But IMO there is nothing wrong with them calling them other things either.

I think its fine if parents call them willies and minnies if they want.

Anyway - what started this off smile

TrillianAstra Mon 20-Jul-09 19:22:53

hercules! shock

Thunderduck Mon 20-Jul-09 19:27:41

On which thread did that happen Hercules?

crazylizzy Mon 20-Jul-09 19:36:00

I think it's fine. My 3year old calls it vagina and penis, as me and DH taught her.

My friends taught her daughter that a vagina was called a twinkle. Since that, her daughter pulls a really confused face when we sing twinkle twinkle little star! wink

tryingtobemarypoppins Mon 20-Jul-09 19:39:11

Parents agreed on a new SOW at school, teachers agreed but wanted the wording to be "age appropraite langauge" to label body parts. Now the Year 1 teacher has refussed to teach any of it as she thinks its gross!

hercules1 Mon 20-Jul-09 19:39:47

It was a aibu - something along the lines of"blood boils etc etc". It was a breastfeeding one and the other poster thought it was wrong to bf a child older than an 18 month old.

monkeyfacegrace Mon 20-Jul-09 19:41:36

My daughter (2.5) calls hers a foofoo, and her baby brothers a winkie. No reason, just sounded a bit 'clinical' to be official. I dont even use proper names, breasts are boobs, and penis is willy/dick, just because thats what my parents called them, so Ive kinda grown up around slang. And for some totally weird reason I feel more comfortable with slang, though Im virtually impossible to embarrass! I really dont think its a big issue either way.

hercules1 Mon 20-Jul-09 19:41:37

I would be seriously annoyed if my childrens teachers didn't use the right words for teaching body parts.

I found that thread Hercules.I don't know if I want to laugh or cry.

Breasts sound too clinical apparently, but baps and tits are perfectly acceptable.hmm

pinkthechaffinch Mon 20-Jul-09 20:20:20

what's wrong with front bottom and back bottom for little girls? They don't really need to know about the (mainly) interior sexual organs until they are a bit older 6/7ish surely?

Thunderduck Mon 20-Jul-09 20:22:39

Front bottom and back bottom sound quite ridiculous imho.

It's best described as a vulva and should be known as such.
Why people get so embarrassed about using the correct term I've no idea.

monkeyfacegrace Mon 20-Jul-09 20:25:03

Its not embarrassment as such, vulva just sounds so...vulgar coming from a toddler! My little one used to get nappy rash badly, and I cant imagine her toddling around, holding her bits, complaining about her sore vulva!

slyandgobbo Mon 20-Jul-09 20:26:13

Ah, that would be my toddler.
On bus, loudly: "I'm just playing with my bulva"
