to not give DS fishfingers?

My (lovely) friend keeps asking me if I have given DS (10 months) fishfingers yet.

I don't really plan to give them to him TBH as we don't eat them ourselves (don't really like the texture of frozen fish so I don't buy frozen fish in any form and try to avoid cod as far as possible for sustainability reasons).

She thinks that even if we don't eat them he should be familiar with them in case he goes to someone's house for tea and is given them to eat. So far I've said that he eats well and doubt he would refuse to eat one if given to him. She also says that they are a good standby to have in the freezer. True.

I don't object to fishfingers and as such wouldn't object if he were given one at someone's house etc.

I guess I'm just wondering of I am being a snob! We cook most of our food from scratch but then I give him shop bought falafel from time to time to save time on busy days so maybe I've got a double standard here.

Also, I was given ff's a lot as a child and remember hating that.

Not one of life's big questions I know but I expect that my friend thinks I am being a bit weird about this!

I've never heard of training being required for fish fingers?

nappyaddict Sat 18-Jul-09 18:44:25

Do you still dislike the texture if you buy fresh fish and then freeze it yourself?

They are a good stand by to have in the freezer but I make a big batch up and then freeze them in little bags.

I don't think YABU. They are a good standby but there is no law that says every child has to have them. Besides, I eat loads of them in fish finger sandwiches now so I'm questioning the wisdom of having them in

Your choice. and if he's a good eater I wouldn't bother. DD is fussier so I'm happy to have something in that I know she'll eat.

This made me laugh grin

Ds3 was never given FF bcos we dont really do frozen fish either blush and ds1&2 have never been v keen on them anyway.

Well we were in a pub one lunchtime for well ermmm lunch and ds3 insisted on fish fingers wink they came all deep fried and crispy hmm and he loved them ......ive done them at home for him but they are not the same he says sad - so whenever we are going out for lunch he gets very excited and looks forward to fishfingers!!

I didn't give them to my DS when he was small, but once I had another child they became a more regular feature. He adapted admirably.

Btw, you can get Pollock FF with Omega 3, and salmon FF, which I think are more env friendly.

Well your DCs don't have to eat anything that you don't want to.

But.......I cook everything from scratch apart from I have a day off once a week and the DCs have fish fingers, oven chips and baked beans. My eldest is 8 and cooking everyday for DCs soon turns into an unremitting chore.

'and try to avoid cod as far as possible'

Why does your friend care so much about what you feed your children?

nickytwotimes Sat 18-Jul-09 18:54:52

Pmsl at 'training required for fish fingers'.

Your pal needs to get a life if she is concerned about what you are/are not feeding your wee one.

<I need to get a life too, but I know this> wink

Does she work in the frozen food industry. Is she called Captain? Does dress up as a man and appear on dodgy looking ship sets and force feed children with uncomfortable jollity and lots of 'ha ha me hearties' ad libs?

BeastQuest Sat 18-Jul-09 19:10:30

MiniMarmite Sat 18-Jul-09 19:11:58

Nappyaddict - texture ok if I freeze cooked frozen fish in a sauce (e.g. in a fish pie) but don't like texture of a frozen whole piece of fish then defrosted and cooked IYSWIM.

Humphrey - I guess she's just trying to pass on 'more experienced mother' experience. Her kids are quite fussy eaters so I think weaning was quite stressful for her compared with my experience.

MadEye funny you should say that, after I posted I started having flashbacks about ff sandwiches and thinking 'mmm actually wouldn't mind eating one of those now!' blush

I think I just object to the notion that certain foods are for kids.

Don't forget - did she change suddenly from an old bearded Santa type captain to a young hip, albeit rather camp looking sailor?
