Me too.
H1N1 sounds suitably sinister and menacing but without the farmyard element.

You are so unreasonable!

Unseasonable won't work - it's winter in some parts of the globe you know and it will be winter here soon enough! H1N1 sounds like a very short football score not a serious illness. Just live with swine flu like the rest of us have to and get a grip!

DD very pathetically informed DH, when he came in tonight, that she has "fine 'flu", sounds much nicer IMO.

funtimewincies Thu 16-Jul-09 20:31:38

But then I wouldn't be able to tell the oinkment joke any more sad!

but think of all the poor piggies.
it can;t be called mexican flu.
it sometimes can be called wineflu

I must admit, I have only actually given swine flu the briefest of thoughts, but it was to wonder if I would be embarrassed to say I had swine flu as I would feel like I was somehow like a pig. blush

<And yes, I do know how strange and irrational that is>

So no, YANBU I would much prefer H1N1 or non-seasonal flu

Congratulations on 1st AIBU, can't beleieve it is your 1st though grin

dh informed me when i got home that the dcs had been watching a Peppa pig episode where George has flu. My ds (6) said it must be swine flu with George being a pig and all.

The original emergenge of the pandemic brought calls for the virus to be renamed as it was putting customers off buying pork. Even the WHO changed it to H1N1 flu. It never caught on tho, cos the media liked swine flu. So we are stuck with it.

I thought that many/most strains of flu originated from pigs, because their immune systems are similar to ours viruses can jump species quite easily and because in many parts of the world people and pigs live in close proximity there is plenty of opportunity for a virus to make the jump. So I've been thinking for a while that "swine" flu isn't really enough to differentiate this one from all the others.

Besom Thu 16-Jul-09 20:46:31

Why can't it be Mexican flu? I like that better.

All the other ones in the past have been Spanish or Chinese or something haven't they? Even bird flu was 'Vietnames bird flu' for a while.

bran Thu 16-Jul-09 20:48:30

Actually since my throat started to really hurt a couple of hours ago I don't really care what it's called so long as I don't have it. I really don't want to be coping with an over-active 5 yr old and a 18 m old when I'm feeling ill and DH is working abroad. <shakes with fear>
