can we go back to this restaurant after it all got a little bit Jeremy Kyle on our asses?

Last week DP and I went to eat at a little thai restaurant round the corner. We've been before and really like it.

There was only one other couple in the restaurant which is very small. They finished their meal and the very young, Thai waitress bringing the bill asked them if everything had been ok. They launched into a patronising tirade of complaint about the food - apparently they have eaten in the best thai restaurants in the land and never had a massaman without cashews (or peanuts, she wasn't sure hmm). And the rice bowls were paltry etc etc. and they were only 'telling her for her own good because otherwise she wouldn't know' in fact it had all been quite poor etc. etc. This went on for a bit, the waitress said very meekly sorry 'maybe next time' at which point they told her there wouldn't be a next time.

Me and DP were rolling eyes and exchanging looks of judgement disbelief etc so girlfriend stands up and starts saying things along the line of 'they're laughing at us, who do they think they are'. Here of course she had a point, it was none of our business, but hey, who wouldn't have?

A slanging match ensues. I say we are looking thus because we are amazed she should be so rude to the waitress. I add our food was delicious (it was). She says we have no class, they have 'significantly' more money than us (is this not from the fast show?) they have eaten in much better restaurants than we ever will, have more money than we have ever seen etc. I say it's nothing to do with class, I just think it was rude. DP chips in with if they eat in such la-di-da establishments why are they slumming it in a cafe where the bill never tops 25 quid for two? More exchanges with no improvement in tone. Bloke offers DP out.

DP says well let's go outside then.

We leave and pay the bill.

Moments later outside, DP and bloke are circling each other, fists raised. They both decide it's a bit silly (DP has terrier tendencies from his extreme youth but understands how dangerous it is to hit someone). They stop.

Girlfriend launches towards DP doing that come-on thing with her hands, telling him, 'hit me, then I'll have an excuse to hit her' pointing at me (enormously pregnant). DP says she needs to leave me well alone as I am heavily pregnant. Apparently, so is she.

Restaurant staff are now outside watching looking very worried. Noone else around in a quiet back street.

DP and I pay (big tip) and leave.

Not our finest moment, I suspect?

Do you think we could just apologise next time we go in or should we find a new establishment for our trashy asses?

Think you should leave the country. smile

Tortington Thu 16-Jul-09 13:06:35

go back- sounds great.

Tortington Thu 16-Jul-09 13:07:28

hindsight i know but

"we have significant'y more money than you" and "you have no class"

people with class don't mention money

Tortington Thu 16-Jul-09 13:08:06

My dh would have floored the fucker - he loves that shit

Blackduck Thu 16-Jul-09 13:08:52

go in and apologise - sure it will be fine - what a pair of ignorant individuals thou' Unlucky you to be in there with such people.....

stickylittlefingers Thu 16-Jul-09 13:09:46

It does sound like there should have been a hidden camera somewhere! What dreadful people. You can go back cos you were the "goodies" grin

Lizzylou Thu 16-Jul-09 13:10:23

Well, I don't expect the other couple will be there again grin

Sounds fun

spicemonster Thu 16-Jul-09 13:10:54

You should definitely go back! I expect they'll give you hugs and invite you into the kitchen. You defended their restaurant and nearly got into fisticuffs over it. Still, they may think you're slightly alarming. You'll know if they don't send the waitress out to serve you but a big bloke instead.

Do report back

Tamarto Thu 16-Jul-09 13:11:17

Clearly they didn't want to pay the bill, there is no way they have any class at all.

Would have been better had your DP floored him.

So imo you should go back hoping to bump into them again for two reasons

1 - To deliver the lines that people will provide on her

2 - So your DP can floor him

I wish things like this happened when I go out for a meal. Would brighten up the evening no end.

Ha ha, that is so funny grin

What a pair of idiots!

madwomanintheattic Thu 16-Jul-09 13:15:08

i love that they have more money than you have ever seen grin

and you must have been stone cold sober, too. totally surreal!

i once got offered out by a young lady who accused me of ogling her man. i had been having a surreptitious look, but only because i couldn't work out whether the individual in question was male/ female/ trans of some description....

i said 'you have a very vivid imagination'

she said 'i ain't got no f*cking imagination!'

i had to leave at that point because i needn't to be somewhere else to laugh uncontrollably without getting beaten to a pulp.

i'd go back. and take your mates. and a bunch of flowers for the waitress to apologise for the other couple and getting yourselves dragged in.

and never, ever get caught eye-rolling again lol.

princessmel Thu 16-Jul-09 13:15:24

You paid the bill twice?

Sunshinemummy Thu 16-Jul-09 13:17:21

Makipuupy that has made me laugh out loud. Hilarious - I'd definitely go back!

Tamarto Thu 16-Jul-09 13:17:27

"she said 'i ain't got no f*cking imagination!'"

I really am loling at that one how did you hold it in? grin

makipuppy Thu 16-Jul-09 13:20:31

Custard - I asked her why she kept bringing up class and money, but I think my posh-side-of-essex accent was winding her up.

And I shan't be telling DP you said he should have floored him you naughty netters, it's taken me three years to bring him to heel grin.

PrincessToadstool Thu 16-Jul-09 13:20:47

You nearly got into a fight because a pair of wankers didn't like the food somewhere? shock

Everything up to paying the bill in order to have a punch up - I could understand. But shock shock shock at taking it, uh, too far!

OhBling Thu 16-Jul-09 13:24:26

I think it's hilarious - I wish I'd been there.

And I like Madwoman's view... take some flowers, apologise and enjoy the fact that your favourite local thai restuarant will never forget you and will always greet you personally when you come in!

Oh, that is hilarious! I'm sorry, I know it wasn't meant to be.

I'm presuming they ate all of the "terrible" food???

makipuppy Thu 16-Jul-09 13:25:27

madwoman - ROFL!

And they'd actually BEEN to Thailand, doncha know...

Yes, we were on the fizzy water while they had knocked back more blue nun than we would have the fortune to bath in, etc. etc.
