AIBU?

in finding Prince William's speeding ticket remarks a bit off?

People die in accidents when drivers speed. I think it's not to be taken lightly by someone who is (at least meant to be) a role model.

oh for crying out loud, are you for real?

no
you are being silly.

what did he say?

What remarks?

Report
Momdeguerre · 07/07/2009 12:34

Only if you can honestly say you never speed.

obviously I am being unreasonable!!

But I'm afraid once you've lost a loved one to someone else's need for speed, you tend to get a sense of humour failure. Never mind.

"...now you have made me a barrister - I promise not to practise, except for the odd speeding ticket,"

Report
stickylittlefingers · 07/07/2009 12:36

Momdeguerre - I really try not to, and the satnav beeps if I do so I slow down (much to the annoyance of other drivers, obviously, who have different priorities to me).

I just wish it wasn't something that was taken so lightly, but clearly I'm swimming against the tide.

YABU, although sorry to hear you lost someone. From your OP I assumed he'd been caught doing some horrendous speed and had dismissed it as not important or serious.

Sounds just like he was making a bit of a joke to me really.

Prince William lost his mother to a traffic accident involving high speeds.

I think you lot are being a little harsh on OP.

Losing someone to a speeding driver must make you even more fed up that there are a lot of people who don't take it seriously.

I can see why you are annoyed.

Speeding kills and yet people seem to blame the system rather than themselves for speeding when they get tickets. It is infuriating.

Having read the article and what was quoted (although think only part of what he said was probably quoted?), sounds as if he thinks barristers issue parking tickets

Report
FabBakerGirlIsBack · 07/07/2009 12:39

He isn't saying he will speed. It reads like he is saying he will give out the odd speeding ticket.

Momdeguerre · 07/07/2009 12:40

I'm not being flippant - everyone speeds - huge cause of road deaths and casulties that I frequently have the horror of dealing with but despite the fact that it is amazingly simple to avoid - everyone does it, day in and day out.

A role model? A big-nosed inbred parasitical dimwit with too many teeth in his mouth??

Get real

Report
Pendulum · 07/07/2009 12:42

He means he will be able to defend himself in court against a speeding charge. It's a rather unfunny attempt at a legal in-joke.

Report
AnyFucker · 07/07/2009 12:42

the Royal Famiy are hardly role models

Report
stickylittlefingers · 07/07/2009 12:42

Yes, Crokky, that makes it all the more odd to me. Does he not see a link?

Thanks TheArmadillo. Tbh, I know what it's like here and that a lot of people are going to think I'm just being sanctimonious. It just seems to be unnecessary and dangerous to me. Joking about it seems to spread the wrong message, when you're the sort of person whose joke gets reported around the world.

OK yes I'm not saying I try to emulate Prince William in every way, but while we're not a republic and he is in line for the throne, this will be reported. I'm guessing he sees himself as a role model in some respects - or what exactly is he for?

If he really thinks he could issue a speeding ticket as a barrister, he is very stupid indeed. It would be a counter-intuitive interpretation and I don't buy it, sorry.

ermm as has already been said - he lost his mother in a high speed crash.

stickfingers, people lose people in all sorts of strange and dreadful circumstances.

You honestly can't expect everybody to think about every comment they make just in case it might upset someone somewhere. You are unrealistic if you do.

It would be akin to me berating every smoker I encounter.
