... or are the locals really rude?

Have just moved to country village outside somewhat la-di-da town where we work.

Went to the local shop. Am now too scared to ever go there again.

Picked up the milk from the shelf, it had a spare label round the handle, which was wet with condensation - it slipped out of my hand and smashed onto the floor, spilling milk everywhere. I moved the vegetables away from the advancing tide of milk, and went to the counter to say I was terribly sorry but I'd just spilt milk and did they have anything to clean it up with. Woman appeared out of the back of the shop
and shoved me aside and said impatiently "Get out the f*ing way, SOMEONE'S going to have to clean that up", and the man at the counter said "oh you're TERRIBLY sorry [posh sing-song accent] are you. Well there's a Waitrose [posh accent] on the other side of [la-di-da town] for people like you, why don't you go there and spill milk and rearrange the shop how you like it, next time."

I said nothing and paid for 2 lots of milk. The man snatched the money out of my hand and scowled at me. The shop full of people all stared at me.

I thought "heavens I'm getting paranoid", looked up from staring at the floor, and realised they were all still staring/scowling at me.

How often do people spill milk in Sainsburys?
Is it such a crime?

It's obviously a local shop for local people.

Was there a fat woman breastfeeding a pig in there?

Sound like a bunch of loonies rather than rude people.

I wouldn't go there again in any case, with that sort of customer service they don't deserve the business.

Good god they sound like utter arseholes. These things DO happen, and you weren't out of line at all to move the veg, you were being thoughtful. As for the posh jibe, that's his hang up not yours. I bet they only acted like that because the shop was full of their friends and neighbours so they were perfoming for an audience. What a pair of shits!

Now, if it had been me I'd have shown them exactly how posh I'm not by telling them to keep their bleeding hair on and stop being so bleeding arsey.

Don't say that about Wales, I'm going there on hols next week. Should I avoid small shops just in case?

Nope, not in Surrey.

No fat people, no pigs. Totally normal looking people, some of whom are undoubtedly parents at the school where DS will be going next term.

The locals vs. not idea comes from the fact the town is separated into (a very large population of) international non-locals, lots of non-local students, and somewhat disenfranchised, clearly disgruntled population of locals.

I have been spat at and called a f*ing posh c**t before, when cycling across town dressed in clothes clearly not for cycling... by middle-aged people who don't know me, who I'd never seen before. They were crossing the road in front of me while i was stopped at traffic lights.

I thought cycling home from dinner was a relatively harmless pastime... just like i thought spilling milk might be annoying but hardly the world's greatest crime...

What is it with these people?

Where the hell are you?

or Wales

not made up unfortunately. At least I look and sound relatively local, so I don't get it in the neck like the Asians and South Americans and Africans...

I once visited the town in Sweden where they make a Wicker goat at Christmas and it gets burned down...

It's outside one of the more multinational university towns... enuff said...
