A chance to use your imagination, to broaden your horizons, to see things from other people's points of view, to follow exciting/scary/happy/sad stories of the type that you just don't get in EastEnders.

oh god, I could not live without books...they are my 'soul-food'.....keep me grounded (after one of my car accidents I just could not read for some reason.....went slowly nuts and on AD's I was that bad!!), but then, TV is not my thing.

if you love TV, then ignore books......tis what makes you happy that counts!!

Knee jerk reaction is to say YABU but not actually sure why.

I find books require more effort than television and as a result I get more involved with them so they are a more rewarding experience.

That said, when I am tired or stressed, I'm with you and its the telly everytime as I just haven't got the energy for a book.

I read the first page and get bored, i have a very good imagination and use it daily

I dont love tv, just prefer to watch it than read a book, i have never been into books even though my parents both love books and always encouraged me to read, i just think they are boring

Not unreasonable but you really are missing out. So much more enriching for your mind. Which is not to say that I don't love TV because I do but I do get a lot more from a book - I watch TV when I am feeling lazy which says it all really!

Have you never read books?

I used to read avidly as a teenager, did virtually nothing else. As an adult, I rarely read now. Lot's of magazines and stuff on the internet, but very rarely a book. I know what I'm missing out on though, because in the past I have read a lot, and I know that at some point in the future I will probably start reading again.

Perhaps, if you have never read, you could give it a go?

I couldn't imagine a life without books. But why are you asking? If you are happy watching TV, then why is it an issue?
One thing I would say though, is that it is very good for children to see their parents reading - there is some research apparently to the effect that growing up in a home where you see your parents read is more predictive of future academic achievement than being read to.

I have read books, but had to force myself to read them, it like pulling teeth, i just dont enjoy it

I will happily listen to audio books though

VT...you don't have to read fiction....what are you interested in...politics, history, religion?...you must have interests...

I dont know what the right books are, i have yet to pick up a book that has kept my interest for more than 1 chapter, even lord of the rings, which is my favorite film

Your choice but I really do think you're missing out.

There's nothing as intoxicating/captivating/seductive as immersing yourself in a totally different world. You just don't get that with TV.

They nurture the imagination and the soul. They extend your knowledge and your vocabulary. They're life enhancing experiences (well the good ones anyway!)

This post is depressing. I feel sad for you.

One of my biggest fears is that our children won't love reading. It has brought me so much joy and comfort in my life. And what you learn about the world, life, relationships, emotions, history etc just can't be gained in the same way from watching television.

But, of course, it is your life and if you don't appreciate reading then you don't know what you are missing out on so I am sure you are perfectly happy.

I just hope you don't pass your attitude on to your children.

I think it is unreasonable to suggest that someone who watches TV only watches EastEnders and thus has no hope of intellectual/creative stimulation. There are plenty of TV programmes that are genuinely educational/factual/mind expanding/ entertaining.
