A high street shop.

On the big front sign thingy over the window.

Sweet Melody's

That was the shop's name.

Am I wrong and unreasonable to find this a shocker?

Maybe Melody is the shop keeper's name?

as in Sweet Melody's shop?

Or just wrong? DH says it's only people like me that would notice.

You need to be on Pedants' corner where you will receive a warm welcome

YANBU, unless Melody's running the show and she's particularly twee.

In my high street, Boots sells toilletries and the 99p shop offers alot of bargains. Both set my teeth on edge every time I walk past. Didn't ANYONE notice? The manager? The idiot who made the sign?

OK, I take back idiot, before anyone shouts. (s)he was probably just doing what (s)he was being told.

But if it belongs to Melody, then isn't it correct?

As in "Sweet Melody's shop"

Incorrect use of the apostrophe does bug me but I tend to ignore it now.
The use of 'alot' instead of 'a lot' is very common, but I can't understand why. It makes no sense. The same as using 'of' instead of 'have'. It makes your sentence lack meaning. I don't understand how people don't realise that. It's more than just a spelling mistake.

I get VERY worked up over missing apostrophes or those placed incorrectly.

I have even been known to have a quiet word with colleagues who have placed incorrect labels on school displays

I used to work with a lady who kept a marker pen in her handbag to correct signs when she wa sout and about.

Can't work out why sign writers don't know how to use apostrophes. You would think it was basic to their craft but evidently not. Maybe they just print whatever the dozy customer gives them.

There is a cake shop which has a delivery van in our town - it's littered with them - wedding's, birthday's, anniversary's - all over the side of the van - why did nobody along the line correct it and WHY did the signwriter who did the lettering NOT KNOW?

Gaaaaah.

Currently, in M&S, you can buy a sauce that's good on stir fry's.

It makes me want to stab myself in the eyes every time I see it. Fortunately, it's nowhere near the knife shelf.

Good grief iMissEdith! I get cross too but couldn't imagine stabbing myself in the eye over it. I like the idea of a marker pen though!

Now I just have to find a shop that sells Marker Pens, not Marker Pen's

I'm afraid I take pictures of punctuation errors with my camera-phone - it was a sign for wine in Sainsbury's that said 'great for party's' (sic) that set me off....

My DP used to live near a coffeeshop that offered 'tea's, coffees, cake's, pastry's (sic) and drinks' - why leave out the apostrophe in some of them?????!!! (and 'pastry's'? Grrr).

Mind you, I go to Amsterdam a lot and the Dutch really do use apostrophes to pluralise; even though I know it's okay in Dutch, I still automatically rankle at the sight of it!

If the sign was for Blossom Hill you could also get them for trade description because the wine is awful!
