How hard is it to grate cheese? Plus that ready grated stuff must be as dry as a bone.

Plus ready sliced cheese. Why would you now just slice your own cheese? What use are those slices anyway, they are thicker than a pound coin, you would choke on sandwiches made of that.

So expensive as well.

Well I don't like grating cheese so I would buy it if I didn't think DH would kill me over the expense . I imagine if you have loads of money, grating cheese is something you can give up, I'd like to!

well, I recently moved into a new house, and had 3 weeks there before my fiance and all our possessions were going to move in - so I bought grated cheese for my baked potatoes. It was great for the first few days, then developed an interesting quilt of mould, way way earlier than I would ever see on solid blocks of cheese.

I buy it sometimes for the following reasons:

without fail, every time i grate cheese, i grate my fingers quite painfully.

also, if i have ready grated cheese I am far more likely to make cheese sauce and other useful things than if i just buy a mahoosive block of cheddar

also, ready sliced makes making sandwiches, a task i loathe with a passion, slightly more bearable

and i am a wee bit lazy too

The only ready grated stuff I buy is gruyere if I want it for cheese sauce etc, but our sainsbury's doesn't sell it any other way and nor does Ocado as far as I can see.

Grated or sliced cheddar is a waste of money - DH sometimes buys the slices if he goes to get stuff to BBQ - no idea why he can't just cut some off the chunk in the fridge, it drives me mad!

Ready sliced cheese, do you mean that silicon cheese that is individually wrapped? School fetes usually use it to throw on top of burgers to make "cheeseburgers" - Vom.

Ready grated is dry and horrid - I know I bought it once much to dh's chagrin (it's his pet hate that people can't grate their own, with the exceptions as GOML stated).

Dp bought it once (ready grated) but he bought mozzarella. It was horrible (gawd knows how you grate mozzarella!).

I suppose I can see the point of the ready grated stuff if pushed, but the ready-sliced? Nah, that's madness!

Kraft individual cheese slices are delicious.

Fimbo - no, not the processed cheese, just cheddar cheese that is sliced up.

Plus when DP had the grated mozzarella put the bag back in the fridge craply, it spilled out and all the gratings went all over the place. He makes less mess with a block of cheese.

Plus it means that I have some for jacket spuds/ cooking that dh doesn't eat. He hacks lumps out of a block of cheese, but won't touch grated except for baked spuds

Well, ready grated mozarella is good for freezing and then just taking as much as you need for a pizza while keeping the rest frozen, so I buy it.

And sometimes, when I'm camping, I'd rather just buy ready sliced or grated cheese for sandwitch/picnic making as it is easier.

The ready grated stuff isn't dry as a bone. Admittedly it is not my favourite cheese, but there is a time and a place for it.

I buy ready-sliced cheddar for my DS1 because:
--he is v thin, v picky and vv lazy, but if there's sliced cheese there, he'll scoff that on crackers instead of wailing for biscuits
--I hate slicing effing cheese for sandwiches every morning when I am non compos mentis
--he has Asperger's (so just lurrrves the idea of uniform, predictable tasteless food)

(and it means I get to keep the fancy cheese all to myself)

Really, how hard is it to grate cheese, you grating refuseniks? Are you the same people who buy the ready mashed potatoes or you ok with the peeling and mashing? What about packet crumble mix, who buys that?

Hold on, it is actually cheaper. Just check the price per kg compared to block cheese next time you are in Sainbos. That's why I always buy it. Tastes exactly the same in a cheese sauce.

When I was 13 I worked in a sandwich shop and my job was to grate all the cheese in the morning - a whole big catering block done with one of those triangular grater things. Am actually surprised I don't hate the job with a passion these days and buy the ready grated stuff myself.

Actually come to think of it this is one of the kitchen jobs I get dd to do. So perhaps I should shut up with my AIBU judginess when I use child slavery help in the kitchen

I'm pretty sure most peopole can slice a loaf of bread themselves, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't hjave the choice not to.
