...before they're of an age where they can soundly make their own sensible decision?

Babies in earrings look vile

I thought you had to be 16 to have piercings?

DSI: It doesn't apply to ears though I hope think it would be fairly illegal to get your baby boy's willy pierced...

It should be illegal - it causes so much upset, as well - "Mummy, Amy and Jessica and Bethany all have their ears pierced, why can't I have mine done?". . .

i've never got babies with ears pierced???

why put them through pain?

looks horrible... (although im not into jewelery or pimping up you kid)

and like someone said, let them make their own decision about it when older.

If that were the case then it certanly should be illegal to circumcise babies as that's actually cutting bits off not just making a holes in them - and that wouldn't go down very well. Even if you had special allowances for religious reasons a massive % of the population of the US (not so many here) is circumcised.

My dd is having them done just before school finishes this term. She is 11 and wants them done before going up to High School in September.

When is a sensible age to allow them to make their own decision.

I decided to get mine done for my 11 birthday, just before starting secondary.

It didn't hurt, it wasn't that difficult to look after them and really wasn't that big a deal.

I do agree that babies in earrings are horrible and I certainly wouldn't do it to my DC but I don't think that you need to wait until they are adults either.

I'm certainly not Mrs FG but don't agree with punching holes in children when they don't have any choice in the matter (obviously that goes for circumcision too). Not sure what the age should be as all children are different and I only have a 2yo - maybe 8?

If they have to be 16 to have piercings everywhere else, then I'd suggest that's the age that should apply to earlobes.

I agree - it should be illegal to pierce children's ears. Parents should not be able to dictate whether their children have their bodies punctured (or bits cut off them, but that's another post..)- it's for the children to decide when they become adults themselves.

My niece just had her ears pieced for her 8th birthday. She had been pestering my sister for a while.

I don't see the problem in older children if that's what they want.

circumcision for non medical reasons I mean. Obviously for medical reasons we all make choices to subject our DCs to a certain amount of pain and discomfort

What is the difference between lobe and other piercings?

If it's into the cartilage, then perhaps - but there are plenty of other places that can be pierced that doesn't involved cartilage - but which still have the minimum age limit.

I'd still say 8 was too young - still too much parental influence.

I had my ears pierced when I was 5, I grew up in South Africa where, according to my mum, everyone had it done. I was going to a party and my mum said I could have them pierced that morning. She said she was absolutely terrified, but I sat in the chair, tucked my hair behind my ears, and the assistant pierced them.

I can actually remember walking past shop windows that morning looking at them and feeling so proud of myself. My mum said I was completely conscientious with the surgical spirit and looked after my little gold studs admirably.

She, on the other hand, had hers pierced for her 40th birthday! I'm not sure I'd let dd have hers done at 5, but it honestly never did me any harm.
