Have decided to go onto Freesat from Sky, to cut our monthly bill.

Found their website (not connected to main Sky site) by googling.
Rang the number listed on there - it doesn't work, there's a recording saying call this number 2.
So I ring that one - that's no longer in service, call the main Sky number.
Options not available on the telephone menu for Freesat.
Get through to a helpful man who says 'oh they're on another number, let me put you through' - line goes dead.
Redial.
Get through to another helpful man who does manage to connect me.
Speak to somebody who doesn't sound too keen, but orders two Freesat cards for me - I have to ring one number when I get the cards to activate them, then ring another number to cancel our current service.
One of the telephone numbers he gives me is the first number I rang this morning, that doesn't work - when I query this with him, he says 'oh, you have to press option 2 twice' (there's no menu, it's a secret option apparently).

AIBU in thinking they're making this really awkward, so I don't have to continue giving them 30 quid a month forever and forever?!!!!

Iknow, our ordinary box hasn't worked for about a year, it's taken me that long (dread of calling them, plus distraction of new baby) to get around to ringing them - took four goes to get somebody to send the right info down the line to fix it ...

and now you've made me put it off for another day!! who needs sky+ when you've got a baby anyway.

i'm sure it's not a coincidence that ours has stopped working at the exact same time that the warranty has run out!!!

I tried to sign up to Sky once, but their evident contempt for their customers (refused to put me through on a non-0870 number) put me off and so I changed my mind and went Virgin Media instead.

This is the first I've heard of freesat from sky
looks a good idea. (I've still got another few months of contract with sky first mind).
Is it really as simple as ordering a card (£19ish)....and then that goes into my sky+ box? Then it's all free?
Do you still get the sky channels? (I'm thinking about Lost).

I moved into a rented house that had Sky and just told them I wanted to cancel the subscription. As there was already a card in the Sky box, I didn't even need to get one of them! Now we have all the Freesat channels, and it's been relatively easy and problem free ...

Do you get anymore channels than if you cancel your subscription and just get the freeview then?

see www.freesatfromsky.co.uk for channel listings.

I have heard that you can just cancel the subscription and use your old card, but I've also heard that the card can 'develop' a technical fault after a while and you then have to get a Freesat card.

Also, I wanted to keep our Sky+ function, which you can for 9.75 a month - I don't like watching live TV any more, can't stand ads and it's handy for DS' favourite programmes, I can limit him to certain 'approved' ones!
