to think that £5 to adopt a plastic duck is too expensive?

My friends asked me to help her on Sunday at her fundraising stall, for a Hospice. Since I am not doing much just now said yes. Its selling plastic ducks - well you dont actually get a duck you adopt it...and its £5. Then the plastic ducks go in the river next week and have a race and whoevers duck wins they get a prize. (First price is a holiday to a caravan place in Scotland)

The idea is quite cute. The prize is good. The price is rediculas. My friend didn't come up with this but she has to find volunteers to run it, however all the volunteers are feeding back that its very difficult to get people to pay £5 for ONE chance to win. Lots of people are coming over interested but back away at price.

IMO £1 or £2 would get that impulse buy as people have that kind of money to hand, a whole fiver in a credit crunch is a lot.

However I know nothing about fundraising etc, so whats your opinions?

£5 is too much

£1 is absolutely fine

(have a minimum donation of £1 and some people will always give more but those that can't won't)

Presumably they reckon they wouldn't get 5 times more sponsors if it was £1. Which is just sensible pricing, only complication is whether people are guilt-tripped into it. If they are selling them on a stall then you've got free will. If people are approaching friends and family it's dodgy.

Also the area they have chosen is one of the most deprived, huge amount of unemployment and poverty. Its in the area for the hospice but it just makes such little sence to me.

I'd back away at the price too
Is the prize donated?
because It is a nice idea and I'd do a £1 just to win some wine/hamper/any smaller prize

Its a stall and I think we are supposed to be pestering people, I am not sure if I should not do that out of principal - as I dont want to pressure people to pay £5 for a very slim chance at winning only 3 prizes. I will go an stand there and be helpful for my friends benefit as its her job to get volunteers - if the volunteers cant sell the product thats the fundraising teams fault.

I agree Paisley £1 and a lot of smaller prizes would be better, more impulse buy factor and better chance of winning something.

Also we are collecting at a supermarket, now trolleys cost £1...huge potential for people to part with that £1.

There was a local fair around here a couple of years back that did the same thing... I think for £5 per duck. It's a bit of an annual event I think - great fun!

They also had a "decorate the duck" competition. Lots of very imaginative entries... Count Duckula, Duck Vader etc...

Crap do you all think £5 is too much for any raffle? We were planning doing £5 a ticket for a long weekedn in a 5* cottage in the lakes at our fair next week.
