AIBU?

to want to know all about "CVQ" and "Lola"?

....all the stuff about trolls IS getting a bit boring, I can see that.

I saw one thread MaggieBee had posted on where she was taken in by a troll, and I felt very bad for her for that reason (I would have been taken in too) and also bad for her that some people seemed to be blaming her for having believed the troll. So I can see why trolls are nasty and people don't like them.

Also, I do think that some of the more enthusiastic "troll hunting" and ing is pretty off-putting.

I feel like I should be grown up enough to not be at all interested in any of the gory details...

...BUT I suppose I also think of MN as a place where it is OK, sometimes, to not be all that grown up...

..and so, I have to admit, I DO want to know - what did these people do??? What did CVQ and Lola do??????

Worst troll remember is someone pretending to be a teenage mum - started with thread about school photos and not being allowed to have one with her child who was in nursery and she was doing GCSEs. Then it went on. She got sent money and text books etc. by some lovely people on here. . Then she came on pretending to be her mum who had been posting for her all along. Can't remember her name though - unpleasant stuff!

I know about CVQ and, apparently, she was confirmed as a troll - though if that's true, it was a pretty shocking story to come up with.

Lola (is that Lolatheshowgirl) - I know her story, but I didn't hear anything about her being a troll?

Thing is, this is an anonymous forum. It's not illegal to make up a story if that's what takes your fancy, as long as you aren't trying to con people out of money...

If someone wants to invest that much time an effort in a story, then they are obviously getting some sort of support from MN..

Personally, I get far more hacked off with single posters who are just plain nasty / post a nasty message or namechange to do so and then naff off....

CVQ pretended that she was raped and had a child as a result of this, had a lot of help from MNers and seemingly endless threads about panic attack etc, a lot happened offboard and she hurt an awful lot of lovely caring people

Lola was a common or garden normal regular. It would seem, no DC, but had had a bad upbringing but came unstuck when one of her alter egos was posting as "her" suddenly, she'd forgotten to namechange back.

PortBlack, that was ethanchristopher.

CVQ was a very troubled person who claimed to have been raped and had a baby boy as a result of the attack. She had people tell her of their experiences on and off board and then used these experiences as part of her own "character". She used the experience of one person against her and as a result this other poster has been deeply hurt by it. She would regularly have "breakdowns" which would often lead to MNers staying up all night with her to make sure she didn't commit suicide.

Lolatheshowgirl was most definitely a troll and was also posting under multiple other names - and outed herself by mistake the other day

I can think of heaps of other memorable and not so memorable trolls and timewasters
All very annoying

Journalists using mn for research etc is a fairly new (I think!) and annoying trend

I must admit, I'm still shocked at CvQ. That was SUCH a horrible story to have concocted and (I know, I used to follow her threads and feel so extremely sorry for her) she went into so much detail - like getting compensation for the attack...

I must admit, I have no clue how someone could have made that up.

Lolatheshowgirl is a new one on me... But, I think I'm pretty pleased she made her story up - the stories about the mother and her husband were really quite bizarre (but funny, rather than sinister... the way CvQ was)

her name was ethanchristopher.

Reality is that there have been two/three prolific trolls about every year.

When I first joined mn the troll everyone talked about was someone called JudgeFlounce, who apparently pretended to be a well-known judge, and who also talked about the death of a child and gave dodgy legal advice.

Then there was the fox, who claimed to be running from an abusive husband in Japan, but who was outed because she claimed she couldn't get a British passport, so a mumsnetter rang the embacy and turned out she was a fake. People got very involved in that one, with plans to meet her at the air port and even to get her fake passports to help her out of Japan (she claimed her husband had influence there so would be difficult for her to leave), she had trolled under a different name before that and a mumsnetter had met her in person.

Then there was cvq, who claimed to have been raped and who had apparently had a baby as a result of that rape, she drew a lot of people in, and again, some met her in person. She then used experiences of abuse that others had suffered against them - again a lot of people were hurt..

No idea about lola, other than that she's a long-time poster...

how was CVQ outed?

I remember some of her threads but missed it when she was found out.

Noonki, I think it was when she started relaying another posters experiences as her own. The other poster's good mate had had her suspicions............

thanks lizzylou, very nasty stuff.

oh I missed the Lola outing but have to admit her saga did seem rather extreme so not too surprised if so. Last posting I saw mentioned going on holiday having allegedly not been abroad for years - felt like querying her apparently disastrous au pairing in Turkey (iirc) but decided against it !

Yikes - I'd been wondering about these too.

Does anyone know what happened to SpaceCadet? Was she genuine?

the outing of lola happened just the other day on this thread

i never, ever understood about CVQ, she was a classic troll from her first ever thread. i distinctly remember thinking 'aye aye, the baby's going to be as a result of a rape' and ten posts later, there is was. i've never seen a more obvious one. i think a lot of people felt that way, tbh, and therefore ignored her. the unfortunate thing is that the hard core of people supporting her did so because her trolling behaviour was specifically designed to unravel their own vulnerabilities wrt rape. it was just despicable behaviour, tbh.

Saltire · 17/06/2009 22:04

With regards to CvQ, I never so much thought of her as a troll, but whenever I saw a thread started by her I would think "God what's wrong with her now", and after a while I got to thinking "surely this can't all be true" and I stopped reading and started hiding her threads.

oh....thank you everyone. Thanks for replying and thanks also for satisfying my curiosity.

As suspected, finding out what exactly CVQ did has made me feel a bit horrible. I think the combination of my childish - gossipy, really - curiosity and that kind of behaviour is pretty uncomfortable.

I do think MN is a very good place, though - I live away from home and it was an absolute godsend when my baby was tiny and I had no clue - not posting so much (although I have a bit) as reading loads of excellent advice. Now he's a bit older, I have strayed a bit into the AIBU threads, which are a bit murkier.

ReneeRusso, I just read that thread with Lola pretending to be REesiroo. omg, the detail she went into. No well-balanced happy person would do that just for entertainment surely..? I think there has to be a certain level of damage there. Lolaroo if you're reading this by any chance, under a new name (?) a few counselling sessions never did anybody any harm!!

Although I did laugh at the endless posts saying "i swear on my liiiiife" so funny!

Saltire, me too! had a natural aversion to CVQ and all her bloody endless faces. ARgh!

that's what i mean, though, i think her behaviour on here was so excessive, all that shaking and weeping, that most ordinary mners just thought oh ffs and left her to it. in a way that's worse, because that left the 'extraordinary' mners, those with relevant experience to 'hers'. what a nut.

one poster mentioned how you can sniff out trolls, the stories are extreme and outlandish and they are so needy
there aren't people like that in real life.
i just avoid those threads

No! no worries! I was suckered in I s'pose! LadyAga says people who are suckered must be foolish and be the type to fall in love on line. Out of any other 100 subjects, my hokey radar would have been better, but if a person has a history/personal experience, it's a chink in their armour... not foolishness. A chink. Yeah, that's my story LadaAga and I'm sticking to it.

oh just realised that comment of ladyaga's was actually on another thread. the one about not giving a feck about trolls! It is getting confusing now.
