LadyOfWaffle Thu 11-Jun-09 20:57:34

How about kiddywinks? grin

Kbear Thu 11-Jun-09 20:58:03

LOL - I talk about "my kids" but for the esteemed BBC to talk about "kids" is lowering standards a step too far !!

diedandgonetodevon Thu 11-Jun-09 20:58:35

YANBU. I hate it too but it seems so widespread these days.

OrangeFish Thu 11-Jun-09 20:59:09

Totally inappropiate, they act more like proper goats than kids

LovelyRitaMeterMaid Thu 11-Jun-09 20:59:45

YANBU - I very much dislike children being referred to as kids. It sets off my internal shudder mechanism

SlartyBartFast Thu 11-Jun-09 20:59:51

shall i write to the bbc and complain?
wink

claraquack Thu 11-Jun-09 21:00:43

It was Newsround not the 10 o clock news, right?

Come on, chill and get down with the kids!

junglist1 Thu 11-Jun-09 21:01:35

psychomum5 Thu 11-Jun-09 21:01:37

You would get on with my dd1 Slarty, she is 5!

The lollipop lady usually says "ok, let's go kids" when it is safe. I have to shush dd she snarls in a very put out voice "that lollipop lady is calling us baby pigs and we are not we are little children"

I have drilled into her to say thank you nicely and not to express her true opinions to the lovely lollipop lady. Also I told her that kids refers to baby goats rather than baby pigs! grin

mum23monkeys Thu 11-Jun-09 21:05:05

I call mine 'boys'. Would be fine, except one is a girl. (in my defence, she did come along after I had had 2 boys so I was used to referring to the offspring as boys) She hasn't complained so far and comes when bidden (usually)

SlartyBartFast Thu 11-Jun-09 21:05:06

in fact 2 of the thread titles at active convos at the this very moment have KIDS in their title
shock

Hassled Thu 11-Jun-09 21:10:07

You are indeed being a grumpy old woman . If I want to call my children Mutant Offspring, Little Petal Flowers or Kids, that is my prerogative. You don't have to like it though, so I suppose YANBU.

BroodyChook Thu 11-Jun-09 21:17:11

Personally, I favour sproggs, monsters or brattlings grin

SlartyBartFast Thu 11-Jun-09 21:38:34

mine all answer to stinky - strangely

AtheneNoctua Thu 11-Jun-09 21:43:04

I love the term "kids". 'tis very American. smile

skidoodle Thu 11-Jun-09 21:50:22

YABU

Words have different meanings. People who are fussy with language in this way just make themselves look like stupid bossybootses trying to be clever.

Shitemum Thu 11-Jun-09 21:52:43

'Kids' is faster to type but they should use 'children' in the media.

In Spain some people refer to their children affectionately as 'los enanos' - the dwarves. Political correctness has yet to arrive here I tell ya.

onagar Thu 11-Jun-09 21:54:17

There was a thread about this before and someone looked it up. It turned out that children were called kids before goats were.

Not that it stops anyone disliking the word. If you do then you do. That's fair enough.

Doodle2u Thu 11-Jun-09 21:54:48

<thunk>

TheBreastmilksOnMe Thu 11-Jun-09 21:54:53

Peeps?

fleetwoodmac Fri 12-Jun-09 21:53:14

I generally dislike the word "kids" too - though very occasionally I use it myself when referring to children generally in a light-hearted way!

I think the reason i don't like it is that "children" seems more respectful and personal somehow. and "kids" a bit more dismissive, as in "its only kids".

it doesn't surprise me about the BBC though. many of them can barely speak english grin
