... We'll be gotten rid of because DP has an Irish grandad? Or I'll get lesser pay for being female?

I'm unsure on how politics work, as it worries me so I try not to hear about it.

But I do want to clear up the rumours for my own peace of mind so can someone please explain to me?

No it doesnt mean that, they may have won a couple of seats as MEP, but they will never be voted in to run the country

Read their manifesto, listen to what they are saying. No matter how they try to dress it up, the truth of what they really think (and want to do) comes out fairly clearly. I won't link to their site - could seem like endorsement or something (shudders). I cried this morning when I heard they'd got two seats then had to explain why to my nine and five-year old daughters. The phrase "stinky BNP" was used more than once.

They may have won a few people over with their watered down, bullshit excuse for a manifesto, but the Monster Raving Lunies actually have more chance of being voted in during the next general election

We hope. Let's hear it for the Monster Raving Loonies.
OP- you forgot to add the bit about your husband being able to rape you at whim and you not being allowed to divorce him because apparently women like it really.

Are the MRL still around. Screaming Lord Such died a while ago now and I havent heard of them since.

There would be riots if the BNP got in

Why don't people think the BNP will get any further?
They already have a big presence on councils like Stoke on Trent and have just got 2 MEPS in. I think the major parties have a responsibility to take a good hard look at what they have been doing that's so wrong that people felt the BNP was a real alternative before this gets out of hand nad ten years down the line unholy alliances are being made. No, maybe they won't get in but their popularity in some quarters could result in mainstream parties becoming more right wing to try and steal back votes, don't you think? This is not a time for complacency.

The BNP didn't get more votes than they've had before - it was just that other parties less votes. So they are not more popular than they were, just benefited from a unique situation.

Report
jambutty · 08/06/2009 16:26

No, but because of that unique situation they now have something to build on. I suspect that is exactly what they will try to do.

Report
TheShipsCat · 08/06/2009 16:34

I'm sure you're right. As you say, its no time for complacency for the other parties. But it was kind of heartening to know their share of the vote hadn't gone up.

And now they're "in", they'll put more acceptable looking thugs people into nice suits with winsome smiles onto the television, keep the dogs chained up and only let out when the cameras are off, and get even more votes next time.

I hope all the other MEPs stage a walk-out like the politicians did with Ahemdinajad (sp?) a few weeks ago.

I've signed this and passing the link on to as many people as possible, hopefully it will let the European parliament, as well as Griffen and his cronies, know that the majority of the people in Britain do not support the BNP.
Just out of interest, how do the BNP plan to 'repatriate' my part English, part Irish, part Malaysian Chinese DS?

Complacency of the masses have allowed atrocities such as the bnp to happen. We seem to think that 'it' will never happen in our little patches of civilisation. Hitler didnt suddenly decide to kill a few million people--he slowly encroached over years. Extremists are a danger to our fragile peace and we should ensure that even the seemingly smallest of their steps -are halted.
If you are interested in signing a petition expressing discontent at this new mep, go to the hope not hate website.

You have a point Bucharest but I am hoping that now they are in their mask will slip. They are bound to show what a bunch of low lives they really are.

Rooftop, that's the petition I've linked to- it's got 19,000 or so signatures so far, so there's quite a way to go to. Hopefully more people will sign this than voted BNP (close on one million votes, which is a terrifying thought)

AnathemaDevice - nearly 1 million votes??

Goodness me, didn't realise it was that many

Just out of interest, are the UKID running along the same vein as the BNP?

Yes the Euro parliament seems like an odd choice of target for people who think the civilised world ends at Dover. I think they can manage to reconcile themselves to Johnny Foreigner provided he agrees that people like Obama need repatriating to Kenya.

I feel that somehow the BNP feel they are representing my interests; I am an ethnic minotiry on my street in that nearly all the other families are Asian (a mix of Hindu, Sikh and Muslim). Shockingly I do not feel oppressed by this as shockingly they're all just perfectly normally people not fomenting sedition in their spare time.
