Bunch of wanker students had a big party downstairs last night.

We had to call the cops cos they had a massive fight in the street.

Then they spent the rest of the evening yelling very loudly in the street right outside my bedroom window, and fecking skateboarding, Until about 4.30am when they woke up DD and I lost my rag.

I yelled at them to shut up about 4 times, but they were too drunk to listen.

The street outside their house is littered with cans.

I'm exhausted. Oh, and today? My birthday.

Is this a regular occurance? If it is, YANBU. If it was a one-off party, then I'm afraid YAB a little bit U as everyone should be allowed a party occasionally. The fighting is though.

Once had a weekend in a holiday flat with some friends (pre-kids, those dim and distant days...). We got exceedingly drunk, had a jolly old time and sang loudly at the tops of our voices til about 4am. The poor people in the apartment above never said a word, bless 'em. However, their kids were up at 6.30am, running around like a herd of elephants with hobnail boots on and screaming like banshees. Served us bloody well right too!!

Make as much noise as you can, it's your birthday! X

i am far to unreasonable i would be going to their door letting them know EXACTLY what i thought of thier antics.... what a bunch of absolute fuckers!! happy birhtday... plan your revenge!!

We had a big party in our shared house - a hot evening (it was general election night when Blair got in - oh what hopes we had!) everyone was outside all night screaming and shouting in the garden, loud music. Our neighbour's husband had serious health problems and the next morning his wife made clear (nicely) over the fence that we had kept them awake all night. I made a cake and the boys went round to the little shop they ran and spent all day clearing up some rubbish for them.

I don't think shouting at them will make any difference. I would put a note through their door saying if, heaven forbid, they are planning any more parties, could they please let you know in advance so you can make other arrangements for your DD. For closure, add that you are cross and tired. If they are basically good sorts this should elicit an apology.

If they are generally noisy then you can complain to the council, but also to the university. Our local university posts a leaflet to all households in September every year, telling residents that if they have noisy students living next door to them to complain to the college...and the students can be kicked out or have their degrees withheld.

I don't think you are being unreasonable even for a one-off event. A few years ago, the people that own the land behind our house had a huge party with fireworks and really loud music that went way into the night. They asked us if it would be alright with us and invited us to the party. This party, as far as being disruptive to our sleep (family of five), was a very close second to the time we had to evacuate our home at two a.m. due to a nearby grass fire but none of us minded, really.
