It's splendidly Jonsonian word, like knob jockey, and I THINK I get it's general meaning, but would like to know more before I take it anywhere.

A male bird living in your spare room.

A bloke who lives with a woman, let's her pay for everything, feed him, clean & wash for him and shag him.

The very worst kind of man - not even one you could describe as a work in progress.

Doodle2U Thu 16-Apr-09 12:57:40

Hey up cornsilk - long time, no speak. Y'OK?

echt Thu 16-Apr-09 13:00:37

First of all, thank you for your swift responses.

Secondly, that should have been "its" not "it's" in my OP.

Booze, eh?

Doodle - love the work in progress reference.

Hi doodle - I'm fine thanks! What've you been up to then? I haven't seen you on here for ages.

The term seems to have originated in Viz and there definition was something like 'bloke who targets a single mum who is so desperate for male company that he will be able to move in, get his washing done, his meals cooked and sit on her sofa watching DVDs all day in return for an occasional couple of minutes of scuttling from behind'.
I think that cocklodgers don't necessarily target single mums but that they can smell desperation on a woman who has been taught that she's nothing without a partner, and so they know that they can spend her money, flirt with her friends, expect to be serviced and kept, all in exchange for the occasional 'romantic' gesture like a bunch of flowers from the petrol station or a bit of grudgingly-done DIY that they claim in a 'man's job'.

Just out of interest, what's the female version of a cocklodger?

cornsilk Thu 16-Apr-09 16:55:16

I'm liking the direction that this thread is taking.

Sorry I asked for my post to be removed because I thought as true as it was it was also uncalled for. Shouldn't of been such a wuss!

LIZS Thu 16-Apr-09 17:06:28

lol , how about a Titwillow ?

solidgoldshaggingbunnies Thu 16-Apr-09 17:19:01

I don't think there is really an equivalent female term as women, even those who don't earn an income of their own, earn their keep in relationships. Even WAGs - their half of the bargain is providing the male sleb with far more sleb-power (and getting rid of any might-be-gay-rumours) by providing all those photo-opportunities...

paolosgirl Thu 16-Apr-09 17:26:51

And, of course, the chances of finding a bloke that will iron for and clean up after anyone else is pretty slim, so there is no real possibility of there being an equivalent female term!

solidgoldshaggingbunnies Thu 16-Apr-09 18:01:26

I do think there is a huge difference between 'cocklodger' and SAHD, obviously - it's not a bloke's lack of money that makes him a cocklodger, it's the mindset that he's doing the woman a favour by existing.
