AIBU?

To think the press are 2 faced?

I know Jade Goody is going through hell right now and I really feel for her and her loved ones, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Even so, does anyone else think the press are really 2 faced cos it wasn't 5 minutes ago that they were all calling her the vilest woman in Britain and what a disgusting example she was setting for her children with the whole Shilpa BB race thing? Now they are all saying what a fab mother she is etc etc.
I know she has chosen to live her life in the public eye, which hasn't always been kind to her but that is now working in her favour. I hope she gets as much out of them as possible cos they have certainly had some mileage out of her downfall.

Er...so what do you want us - journalists - to do? To continue to slag her off? JG has said some vile things in the past. However, she is dying and deserves sympathy and, yes, respect for much of the way she is handling this.

I'm not wild about David Cameron, but I still think he is going through hell at the moment too.

Well if the press are 2 faced then alot of the public must be too, because it was only 5 mins ago that they were slagging her off too, and now she has a lot of public support for what she is going though

I dont think it is a case of being 2 faced, she is obviously going through hell and deserves sympathy

If you mean 'why did people slag her off for making disgustingly racist remarks in the past' well, er, she made some disgustingly racist remarks.

Yes the press are 2 faced. But in that way so are most of us.
I have never had a lot of time for JG, particularly when all the racist stuff came out. I thought then that she was an ignorant bully.
But ... whatever I thought of her then, now I do feel desperately sorry for her. She is a mother with small dc who is dying a horrible painful death.
Not to excuse her bad behaviour in the past, but I just feel sympathy for her and applaud her for using the media to get enough money to educate her children.

YABU

the press were reporting the circumstances as they were then

they are now reporting them as they are now

the press do make a field day out of scandal and tragedy, and we buy it and discuss it

twas ever thus

i was critical of Jade re the racism issue, however, that does not mean i cannot feel immesne sorrow for her and her situation and the fact two boys will not have their mother

yes, the press is inherently "two faced." Rightly so. At its best it's called being unbiased.

If the press always took one side on everything, there would be no questioning of the status quo.

don't they just go with their readers..
Can't imagine people would want to read nasty stuff about her.

surely they're simply a reflection of soceity.
i mean a year ago everyone was in agreement that she was a vile racist bullying cow.
now everyone seems to be in agreement that she is st.goody greatest mother of all time and completely unique and inspiring.

the press mainly take this angle to sell papers (i mean what would slagging off a dying mother do for your sales)
the public much the same. probably transferred guilt about what they said in the past and also the need of some to be involved in the modern day soap opera that is the cult of "celbrity".

personally her illness has not changed my opinion of her in the slightest and am a bit miffed by those who seem to think having cancer gives you a free-pass on your past actions, but what good is me slagging off a dying person doing. others may actually have had their opinion changed by the way they perceive her to be handling this.

in short if the press are 2 faced, which they undoubtedly are, it only because they perceive their customers to be equally fickle and two faced.

Wigglesworth- i have thought the same myself and also thought it when pricess diana died. but they could not slag off a dying women.
i also think that there is too much coverage. i recently lost my sil to cervical cancer. her story is almost identical to jades and i wonder how it would have made her feel watching jades illness pan out in front of her eyes when she was facing the same herself.

Why is it two-faced? Surely I can have the opinion that Jade has been utterly awful in the past, but still feel sympathetic towards her now? I am not excusing her past actions by doing this (not that she should give a flying whatever what I think...) Life is all about shades of grey, surely?

As for the press, well it's all about circulation. Of course they'll write about whatever is going to sell. That's business.

Journalists (sorry MI, this may or may not apply to you) go with public opinion because let's face it, they want to sell papers. No journalist worth their salt is going to slag off Jade Goody now are they? Not if they want their sales. No, they'll splash some heartwarming story about her on the front page to get people to buy that newspaper.

If you think that's two-faced then fair enough. But next time you pick up a newspaper just question why you chose that particular paper above the rest.

Nothing to do with being 2 faced just a change in circumstances.

Although as much as I hate t say it I am getting rather fed up of seeing Jade all over the front of the papers and magazines, I know what she is going through is horrible but is there any need to pick at her biography just for the sake of a stry? It's been about for a fair while nw, do we really need to hear everyday about her ups and downs on TV? No we saw them frst time around.

There are other things going on and whilst I hhave a lot of sympathy, there are other things going on too.
