AIBU?

To think that some MNers don't really need to be as bloody rude as they are!

Why are some of them so rude?

I know it takes all sorts to make a world go around but really, is there any need for some people to be like they are?

I've come to the conclusion that they must spend all their time having to be nice to people in RL and find it a real strain so come on here and rip into total strangers with impunity for a bit of light relief .

Who's being rude?

Report
donnie · 03/01/2009 22:02

you can't really name any of them though - that would be rude.

Gunnerbean - it's the same on many forum websites - the keyboard warriors sit safely at home saying things they wouldn't dream of saying to someone's face!

Having recently started a new job surrounded by mainly all women from diff walks of life, I have found that a lot of people are rude/blunt/offensive in every day life...sometimes not meaning to be (though sometimes they do mean it!),but its just how they come across. I need to develop a thicker skin!

Oh yes, sorry, didn't mean to be offensive

Some people are just a bit more blunt than others and bluntness comes over more strongly in text than it does in speech. Facial expression is lost in the written word and that can make things seem ruder than they were intended to be.

You're right, Gunnerbean. Lots of rude bullies on here.

It's the 'shield' of the internet. They wouldn't dare be so rude in RL because they'd probably get a punch in the mouth! Pathetic.

I think that even now there are 1 or 2 very rude people on here. There was someone who was very rude to me the other week and I have noticed her doing it too other people.

It is fine to disagree but some people just seem to enjoy being rude and upsetting people.

Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 22:09

I've rarely seen rudeness - very frank giving of views yes but not actual rudeness. It isn't actually rude to say you disagree with someone!

Loving Keyboard Warrior!! I want to be a keyboard warrior for kindness and justice! With a cape with wire so I look like i'm flying at my desk!!!!!!!!!

What do you define as rude though?

TWINSETinapeartree · 03/01/2009 22:11

I know northern and if we all agreed this would be a boring place to be. There are still posters who take delight in being rude and hurtful, what is odd is that they do not do it all the time but have the odd day when they go from thread to thread offending people/

I agree, there are some very rude people on mnet. They must obviously get some kind of kick out of being so rude.

Gunnerbean · 03/01/2009 22:12

People obviously have different standards/boundaries but I have certainly both seen and experienced rudeness here. But there again, I suppose this is the www after all and you meet all sorts here, just as you would out on the mean streets.

Is this about the garlic thread?

Report
OrmIrian · 03/01/2009 22:13

Nope. Not seen rudeness. I can't abide rude people so I'd be off straight away

If you pile in with an inflammatory statement or equally something stupid, you will get some frank views in exchange. And no, generally that might not happen in RL, bu that's OK. But then again I wouldn't normally discuss many of the subjects aired here with complete strangers in RL, so it's hard to assess.

Must admit, I've not seen very much real rudeness. Frankness - definitely but (and please don't take offense) I don't use Mumsnet because I want everyone to be polite to me. I want a bit of bite-back occasionally - helps to claify things!

I have to say, yes, there were a couple of rude people on that thread. It's not just about that thread though. I have seen rudeness and dowright nastiness elsewhere too but as I've said, I suppose you have to accept it...

Twinset, I know what you mean about people having 'off' days.

I know one particular poster who seems to have these and lay into people and then when she is called on it will use whatever tough RL stuff is going on to excuse her behaviour.

I can't name her though, that would be rude

I think it is great that posters can be much more frank than in RL and agree or diagree - yes sometimes people are rude and sometimes things are taken the wrong way.

Report
Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 22:15

Maybe I'm on the wrong threads - I certainly see some people who delight in being perverse but I'm sure I annoy them as much as they aggravate me
