AIBU?

To refuse to give anymore fruit to ds and insist he eats some toast instead!

I think I may have given birth to a fruitbat instead of a small child - ds constantly demands fruit! I give him over and above his 5 portions a day (as well as carrot sticks and other healthy vegetably stuff) but this morning he has already had a satsuma, a banana, a handful of grapes and an apple. And a box of raisins.

He has had a big bowl of porridge, so he's not just hungry - but I'm worried about him ruining his teeth and giving himself a dodgy tummy! His nappies are already somewhat....loose.

And he does eat the occasional bit of chocolate and regularly has biscuits, so he's not just got a sweet craving that he's trying to satisfy with vast amounts of fruit!!

I should make the most of it!

yes - or just say he's had enough for now?

We are celebrating in my house as my dd has decided she does indeed like apple (peas are too small, and too green )

Suzy - Jesus would probably turn the fruit into toast? Meh...I dunno. 16 years of Christian upbringing down the drain there then!

He's now decided he does want toast after all! He's still too little to reason with, that's the problem!

DD4 (2yrs) is just like that. a lot of parents would dream about having children like ours
He might just like the juicyness of fruit. I did hear as well that fruit acid erodes teeth enammel but surely it cant be worse than sweets and chocolates(the British dental association might differ, ask your dentist). He had porridge so as you said it is not out of hunger, he just likes it. How old is DS? Am still breastfeeding DD4 (for another month or so) and I think she might get in fruits the liquid she refuses to drink from a beaker. If he is developping fine, I for one do not think you should worry too much.LOL

He's 21 months and just stopped bf-ing (my choice, not his ) - he will drink water and juice out of a cup, so it's not fluids he's after.

He does just LOVE fruit! No pleasing us mums is there!?

noonki - it's really hurting his bum though. His poos seems really acidy - his bum cheeks were bleeding this morning from nappy rash.

toast and porridge isn't too carby, children need carbs.

Squash a banana on the toast.

apparently (i have never had to use it, luckly) if you whip up egg whites so its like just before you would put in meringue and put in the nappy it will do wonders for nappy rash, and you can store it in fridge for 24 hours, in an air tight container.
but like i said i have never had to use it, good luck trying to get rid, poor DS

Could you try him with raisin toast?

Report
Pinkjenny · 29/10/2008 11:24

Dd had a box of raisins for breakfast this morning, refused her toast completely. I try not to stress about it, but she also suffers with a sore bum, particularly if she has too many grapes. I try to limit the intake as much as possible.

I have tried raisin toast, she seems to like it, although she is a little suspicious of it...

Good grief! What time did he get up?!

Maybe, if you really don't think he is hungry or thirsty just treat it as sweets or biscuits and say sorry no more.

DS2 is exactly the same, my family look at me as though I am not quite right when I refuse to give him any more carrots untill he has eaten his potatoes, meat etc. I have to explain boys cannot live on carrots alone!

Saying that he has recently had to have nasty surgety on his palate and has only been able to eat soft food, so my fruit/ veg lover has been in his element with all the soft fruit and veg he's been having!

Not nice for your poor DS's bottom. Poor boy.

Does he like the vegetable raw as well or would DS eat some cooked ones? For DD4 I steam carrot stick with diced potatoes it seems to work to get something starchy into her9 you can put a bit of butter on top for fat). You can even wait until it is cold to give it to him. Bananas were my saving grace at one point( for the liquid poo). I have not yet managed to get her to eat much of anything else than fruit but am in the process of "reversing Annabel Karmel". I now try to "sneak" some pasta in her veg. so far so good.

Bozza - he wakes up at around 7 and then eats solidly for about an hour and a half.

What's that saying? Breakfast like an emperor, lunch like a king and dine like a pauper? Suits my ds down to a tee!

I put some metanium on his bum before he went to bed last night and then smeared Kamillosan on this morning - seems to be much better!

I would restrict it. Like any other foodstuff, you can overdose. Also, comes expensive if that's what they eat in preference to such cheap foods as toast and boiled spuds.

Mine are the same- would live on fruit if allowed. I encourage it up to the point where I think it is a) healthy b) affordable.

Also, you could make sure he gets water out of his mug and not juice, as juice has worse effects on teeth than chewing fruit.
