ok so my parents usually take dc to dc great grandparents but last weekend I took her.

There was a nintendo gamecube, a nintendo wii, a snes and an xbox and a playstation. There were also three nintendos ds at anyone time.
There are LOADS of grandkids and he has kind of got dumped with all these consoles when new ones have been bought and then he got them a wii last year. There isnt an option of buying one as they are all used weekly.

Dc go during the week if off school to visit and play with their cousins and also most saturdays.

Dd wants a console, I cant afford a wii but thought about a gamecube or something but I dont really see the point when she can go and play the ones there when she wants.

if your gp's have 3 nintendo ds's, how about you buy one of those off them for your house? or swap it for a different toy to keep there?

They cant be using 3 at once there surely?

The three nintendo ds belonged to various grandchildren who were there that day hence dd thinks she is hard done by because they have them, I have tried to buy or swap the consoles but no one will let me as when all 12 grandkids are there they all get used.

Tell them "tough, my house, my rules, get used to it."

5 yr-olds don't need games consoles.

My boys are used to it by now. The sob story of "all their mates have ... DS/playstation/Wii/mobile phone/TV in bedroom/laptop etc" just doesn't wash water with us.

We make the decisions on what they get when according to what we think is appropriate and what we think is a reasonable/affordable amount to spend on it.

Think you are worrying unnecessarily. But agree it won't hurt not to have a game console at 6, certainly. At 8 I think it's quite difficult not to have one. But then again i grew up in a tellyless house, so know that feeling of being the only child in the known universe not to have proper access to popular culture. Don't get me wrong- it didn't make me a loser or unhappy but I wouldn't choose it for my children. And I think consoles these days are the equivalent of tv then. Using them as a treat in the holidays isn't the same thing- I would let them have a reasonably priced one at some point over the next couple of years if it was me.
