YANBU, charity shop sounds like excellent idea whats the point in keeping something you are never going to use, better that it goes to a good cause...

Having said that I am a complete wimp, SIL bought me hideous fake flower arrangement which I tried to place in most inconspicuous (spelling) place I could find. Last week dh was pulling a heavy book from book shelf which fell and squashed it, he was in fits of laughter. Said he knew i hated it and was waiting to see how long I would leave it before I said something and got rid!

YANBU - Start buying your DP equally rubbish gifts and see how he feels then about it

YANBU but why not ebay them instead and buy better gifts with the money?

I have the same problem - somehow because it is from the MIL, it must get pride of place ... my 'display cabinet' is full of the rubbish treasures she has given us ..

Wish I could give them away ...

don't know why hes being funny - they're joint presents & have been in the loft for a year (he found them when clearing it out!) & there was little thought put into the buying of them - things that dont match any room in our house etc!

85% of what MIL gives me goes straight to charity or I pass it on to friends. She insists on buying tat. I politely say 'I really don't need another pair of hideous, floweryPJs or a another revolting, cubic zirconia bracelet'. She buys me more. What other option is there?

YANBU - that's what charity shops were invented for.

YANBU.

i freecyle or charity shop anything that's unwanted.

we are renters and although the home we are in right now is spacious, there's no way our next one will be.

we don't have room for unwanted crap.

YANBU - let someone else profit from your MIL's revolting taste

I tend to stick it on ebay, so you're much nicer than me!

the tatt i get usually isn't worth selling on ebay, so i freecycle it first and then charity shop it.

YANBU. I've returned loads of MIL's gifts to M&S, where they inevitably come from. I would sell them on ebay if you can cos at least you can actually get yourself something different then. You can always donate a percentage to charity if you feel guilty!

I pass on MIL's strange gifts, if I can exchange them I do, if not then bin/freecycle/charity shop.

There is no way I am cluttering up my house with the stuff we get from MIL

LazyLine -

I have a cupboard that I stuff all unwanted gifts in until I get round to sending them to a charity shop or recycling as gifts for others.

I forgot that mil had given me a particularly hideous hat one christmas and gave it to her the following year...

boot sales, too.

i have thought to flog some of these gifts and they did surprisingly well in boot sales.

LOL Tn0g

Of course you have to be careful with this, though some people seem to be professional shit present givers that maybe they deserve it.

A lot of Ds's gifts from MIL end up being passed on, usually to charity.

My mil gives me the most ridiculous crap whilst giving bilsgf gorgeous and expensive things. She has never liked me so I think i just get something grabbed off a shelf as a 'this'll do' type thing.
Most items have ended up in the charity shop, sometimes on 27th December

The plastic purple sequinned clutch bag she got me 5 years ago, I was at a complete loss to describe it to my sister in Melbourne. Emailed pics just didn't fully capture is nafftastique-ness. So I sent ot to her all wrapped up for her birthday in february and I hear its still doing the rounds among her friends as a joke present down under.

I get them useful things that are laughed at on the day (behind my back ) but then appreciated later on. Like the hot water bottles I got them when they were buying that draughty unheated cottage in the lakes...

You should keep them (in a special cupboard under the stairs) out of politeness. My MIL is a mediocre artist and also hates me and gives me --shitty- pictures all the time. Have kept them all but in the shed or hall cupboard. Silly but polite.

most people don't have room to store unwanted junk, though.

if i give someone a gift, it's theirs to do what they wish with.

if they want to flog it, bin it, freecycle it, re-gift it, that's fine by me!

shoot, it is slightly different when someone makes you something I think. What I object to is ill thought out, last minute shit. And I know it is last minute as every year we ask MIL for present ideas and she throws out the "it's too early to think about that" line, right up until about a week before. So I know she is trawling the shops at the last minute.

I would rather have nothing!

Report
expatinscotland · 14/10/2008 19:31

nope. life's too short to keep shitty art.

Report
LazyLinePainterJane · 14/10/2008 19:34

Plus, the thing about people who give ill thought out rushed last minute presents, is that they never remember what they gave you as they put zero thought into it. So they don't know if you don't keep it!
