The story.... one boy (hers) has allergy to nuts so now nutella is banned . I totally understand the whole anaphlaxis thing but as mum to year 1 boy with multiple food allergies - i would never expect the rest of the school to stop eating what he is allergic to.

Nutella was one of the few spreads which he could eat and made the bread edible. not healthy I know but more important to get energy in him.

What do you think?

Well seeing as you can be affected by others eating nuts if you have a severe allergy, I think YABU I'm afraid. I can see what you mean though.

YABU if that one child could die if he came into contact with nuts/nutella or could have severe anaphylaxis

children can manage without nutella, if your child has multiple allergies, surely you can understand?

peanut butter has been banned at DSs school and rightly so IMO. although as DS has a peanut allergy i am biased

I think if a food has the potential to kill a child, then everyone, including all the other parents need to support any measures to keep that child safe.

It's a no brainer.

YABU

I would have thought you would have had a bit more sympathy tbh given your own circs.

In ds's school peanut butter is banned too and one teacher has a severe reaction to tuna, so no-one in her class is allowed tuna either.

clearly you don't understand the nature of anaphylaxis as well as you think you do.

I assume its because that boy could die if someone eats nutella near him.
I'm guessing that your childs allergies are not fatal and thats why the rest of the school may continue eating what he is allergic to.

As I understand it, severe nut allergy can be triggered by just being in the same room as nuts. So yes, YABU. But I doubt banning Nutella is going to prevent all problems if the child's allergy is that severe. I assume peanut butter was already banned?

yabu...the child could die.

Just re-read OP and title.

Are you annoyed because the child with the allergy is the son of the HT, and you feel this is preferential treatment?

If so,

Of course YABU ! The school are being very responsible- good on them.

Sorry but I don't think you do really understand 'the whole anaphylaxis thing' if this is pissing you off.

Think of it as an opportunity to get your DS to eat properly or to examine any real food phobias he might have.

I thought that nut alergies were generally peanuts? Nutela contains hazelnuts.

I can sort of see the motivation but tbh there are steps that could be taken that would avoid the child coming into contact with nuts - no sharing of food etc being crucial. The child doesn't have to come into contact with nutela.

Is the ban specifically on nutela - could you send in a different, non-branded chocolate spread instead?

FFS. they ban hot foods in lunchboxes for health and safety reasons. ban all snacks in lunchboxes but fruit. ban nutella. ban tuna. ban peanut butter. close school kitchens left right and centre.

why not just starve tehm all day, then no one gets hurt?

YANBU.

of course you are being unreasonable.
i fail to see how getting energy into your DS is more important than preventing the death of a child.

Ours is a nut-free school. Except the head of course!!

I happily give my kids nut-free stuff if it stops another kid having an allergic reaction. It's not difficult.

Beachcomber are you kidding? The op does not have a child with food phobias! She has a child with food allergies. I'm sure she is already doing everything she can but she's looking at a limited menu.

you know, there was a kid in Australia who died recently

because he was anaphylactic to nuts and a kid who'd been eating them yelled in his face. the nut oil on his breath, breathed in by the allergic kid, was enough to do it.

so yes, sorry, yabu.

nut allergy can be to groundnuts, treenuts, or both.

Report
SmugColditz · 06/10/2008 21:32

why don't you get a nut free version/
