to be glad that I said 'what a load of old rubbish' to the perfectly nice old lady in the butchers?

when she said 'oh three girls. well I always say boys hug you because they love you and girls hug you because they want something'

she was taken aback

but the butcher winked at me when I paid

I think that the "three boys" comment is actually very sad. It's not very tactful, but she probably blurted it out because she has never got over the loss (and I can't imagine that she was treated very sensitively at the time either).

wabbit Thu 25-Sep-08 16:35:29

ll grin norty!

She was probably just regurgitating the crap she'd heard as she grew up and had never really thought about what the statement means

Don,t think you were unreasonable - what had prompted her to say it? was your dd displaying affection?

Majeika Thu 25-Sep-08 16:35:38

LOL at these!

'one died' shock what are you supposed to say to that??

Mercy Thu 25-Sep-08 16:38:15

Well, I have to say that's mostly true of my dc.

But then I would never say that to someone as it's probably just how mine are.

SmugColditz Thu 25-Sep-08 16:43:31

It wasn't my mother was it?

She was really cross that I had sons, she wanted me to experience daughters, who she claims are manipulative, spiteful, unaffectionate and cruel.

It wasn't much fun being her daughter, especially as she had a son 5 years after having me.

Truth be told, it's affected my sister worse, as she has repressed any sign of femininity in order to not be as 'irritating' as I was. My sister actually isn't gay, but I think she would like to be male.

My MIL had 3 boys and one died....... If it was her, you have my deepest sympathy.

wabbit Thu 25-Sep-08 16:52:40

Totally StatFrosty - a now ex friend would do this when ds was first born and she'd invite herself to tea and biscuits as I was a captive audience.

taking ds from me to 'free' me to put kettle on... 'how could anyone hurt em'

Me (seething) 'Hmm hmm just doesn't bear thinking about does it???!!!'

TheSoapEatersMum Thu 25-Sep-08 17:14:05

My MIL says " how can anyone hurt em?" whenever she sees my DS. It is such a weird thing to say - especially coming from my MIL who used to hit DH with her shoes when he was small hmm

TheSoapEatersMum Thu 25-Sep-08 17:16:32

And in answer to the OP- YANBU, well done for saying it! Might make the opinionated bugger think twice next time!

sweetkitty Thu 25-Sep-08 17:18:25

My mother says that as well "how could anyone be bad to them?" talking about babies hmm

I usually get "oh you've got your hands full" or "oh your poor husband!" when old dears see the 3 DDs.
