AIBU?

to want to get my tongue pierced?

i dont want to look like i am going through some kind of ageing crisis.

i used to be a bit of a wild child during my younger days, have got a few tattos and holes from old piercings but i am now a mum of two who works in a nursery with young children.

i have always fancied getting my tongue done but have never got round to it, my friend is going next week and has asked me to go with her. it would be the perfect time to get it done as dd's will be at school/nursery.

i am worried about something going wrong though, how likely is that to happen?

also i have turned into a total wimp since having dd's and not sure if i can cope with the pain.

should i go for it or keep it as something i wish i had done when i was younger?

I wouldn't do it although might one day get my belly button done again as I've got a bar my mum brought me for my 18th. At least with the belly button you can choose to hide it if you like. Plus with a hole there it's more likely to get infected/ affect your eating/ talking - not good imo.

If you are over 25 it will look ridiculous.

sorry.

YUCK! again, people with their tongue pierced are always playing with it and sticking their tongue in and out. Bleurgh.

Also i think it depends what message you are trying to send to people, first impressions count for a lot.

I had a tattoo when I was 16 in a place that's not covered a lot of the time, I'm now a childminder and i try to cover it when potential parents meet me so they think about me as a person rather than judge me because of something I did when I was 16. Once they get to know me they don't care about the tattoo but I worry people will judge me.

Why do you want it done? What else could you spend the money on? Do you like soup?

you do realise your tongue can swell up to fill your mouth? My bro had it done and couldnt talk properly for three days. That could be a problem with work/caring for your own children.

Then when the swelling goes down you have to get it swapped for a smaller bar.

He also had problems with infections, and puss seeping out of your tongue is not pleasant! He took it out in the end.

I had mine done in my misspent youth. You talk with a lisp for quite a while and eating is hard, it kept catching on my teeth and making me wince. Im not sure if this is the same for everyone, but they put a really large stud in first to allow for swelling and it feels huge in your mouth.

Unfortunately for me when they replaced the large one with a small one after a few days my tongue swelled again to such an extent that literally overnight it had grown over the stud, and I couldnt see it at all. I went back (too scared to go to doctors) and they pushed it back up through the tongue (nice!!) and replaced it with the big stud again. I ended up taking it out as it never settled down properly.

My tongue is now over senstitive to food like citrus fruit or tomatoes but not other lasting effects. It didnt hurt to get done at all, but the swelling and replacing hurt a lot.

The tongue is a muscle, not a random piece of soft tissue. Don't do it.

Don't get your tongue done, you will chip your teeth every time you bite down on it when eating.
Don't get the lip done either, you can't hide it when you need to.

there are other more private places you could go for if you must. I know a woman who did that and I cringed for her at the thought of the position she must have been in when the BLOKE did the piercing !

Oooh please don't do it!
I had mine done when I was 17 (I'm 27 now) You get stinky breath, furry tongue, broken teeth, and it makes you talk weird for ages. Plus when you first get it done, they put a really huge bar in for your tongue to have space to swell which looks ridiculous!
You can only eat soup for days, and you have to wash your mouth out every time you drink eat or smoke (pita!)
I followed all these instructions and still have a horrible white lumpy scar under my tongue, it's truly bogging. AND I have a back tooth missing where the bar went in between my teeth when I was eating a pasty ( greggs! ) and bit hard on it and my tooth broke in half!

Sorry hope I don't sound preachy, I really don't mean to! I just think you might regret it!

I almost got mine done when I was 21 but the bloke at the pace I was going to get it done told me not to as my teeth were too nice (after hellish years with cemented brace and headgear) and I would mess them up!

Oh god SoapEatersMum's story is enough to put anybody off and I'm sure they are not the worst things that could happen..

Really, do some research before you make a decision.

Have you ever seen an infected piericng on the outside of a body? or one that's growing out? Imagine having that in your mouth.. and the taste of pus

Ive had mine done twice,

been done for 8 years no problems, no lisp, no infections.

Just make sure you go to a very reputable piercer.

And I don't think it hurt, I had it done without numbing spay and found it fine.

Me and my mum got it done together first time round! lol

Och. lots of tooth injuries, had mine done 15 years ago and it's still in now, I have never had a problem with it and have asked my dentist who say's it hasn't damaged my teeth, I did ask for it to be pierced as far back as possible though. In all honesty you need to get it done when off work for a week or two or no one will have a clue what you are saying to them!

I've had my tongue pierced for years, at one point I had it done 3 times. The worst thing that happened was that I got an ulcer under the third one when I had the long bar you get initially as it rubs your mouth. I love it, and really don't feel like myself whenever I don't have it in. Some advice, should you decide to go against the naysayers...

Go to a reputable piercer. This is a must, as they will know about positioning etc, so that it doesn't whack off your teeth etc.

Keep it clean with salt water rinses only.

Don't play with it, or roll it round your teeth or any stuff like that, one you'll get an infection, and two, you'll look gross.

I've had damn near everything pierced over the years, and the tongue ones have always been the easiest to look after, and have caused me the least problems.
