To think gobbing in the street is unacceptable?

Why do so many men do it? I blame footballers, why are they allowed to do it on the pitch? Can't they hock up in the lavs before a game? Can we start a Mumsnet campaign to program our sons, roping in premiership footballers and their mums?

I'm getting deja vu...

And as I said before. It ain't just men. Try hanging 'round a London borough for a bit.

But you're right. Although I would say it is vile.

Not at all unreasonable, it is a filthy habit. I can't stand it when I see men doing it in the street, I don't want to walk through if ffs!

Ewwww its my major pet hate! Its totally disgusting to hear someone hocking in their throat to get all the phlegm up and then depositing it on the floor.

[insert vomit smiley here]

Agree. I just want to shout

'Oi you fucking neanderthal, use a tissue you dirty bastard'

Can you see, this is one of those things that sends me Tourette-like.

Lol buckets.

YANBU about gobbing in the street. It is fowl!!

I'm sure there will be an explanation about why footballers do it, but it is grim!!

It is banned in some countries, as it is a major - or can be a major cause of T.B.

It is vile, even worse in some areas with the vocal noises first then the actual spit

I absolutely HATE it! It seems to be an Olympic sport among the neds that hang around on street corners here and it makes me want to boak.

I actually do shout out "errrr, you disgusting tramp!" really loudly. As long as you're in a crowded place, you should be safe from getting stabbed!

Oh sorry, has someone done this recently? I turned round and said "Oh that's charming!" to a young bloke in town the other week (before scurrying away.) He was with his wife and baby FFS!
Boys are so influenced by footballers, it's obviously something they pick up and don't grow out of.

I think it's one of the most disgusting things.... Kids passing our house on the way to/from school do it all the time, sometimes onto our lawn, yuk yuk yuk.

DS (9) did it in the bathroom the other day (at least it was into the loo), and I made it clear that I did not find spitting acceptable in any way shape or form. If I hear/see him doing it again, I'll clip him round the ear lobe.

clumsymum · 22/09/2008 15:03

mayorquimby, WHY do you spit on the pitch? It's unnecessary and vile.

yuk yuk yuk

i hate it when people spit, it sooo disgusting, i hate it esp as i could never have my TB jab because it affected my family badly and so i wasnt allowed to have it! so by spitting on the street people are greatening the chance of me getting TB!!!

grrr

if i am feeling annoyed i will say something, if they look like little bastards. i find it harder to when they are a bit older, because i just feel like they should know better.

it gets to be more when you can see then sniffing back all their mucus first, that makes me want to be sick, i actually feel bile rise up my throat.

A friend of mine runs and she tells me that when running she gets a build up of spit in her mouth that she just must get rid of, so she gobs in the gutter.

I don't get it myself, but then again I don't run, if I can help it.

I agree...its VILE!!
I just dont get what would posess someone to do that!
I have never even had the urge to hack that stuff into my mouth, let alone to then spit it on the floor for others to have to tread over!

It is beyond revolting. I would vote for any political party the promised to imprison any twat that gobs on the street.

"when running she gets a build up of spit in her mouth that she just must get rid of,"

Well, everyone else swallows it, surely?

No flipping excuse...

Report
mayorquimby · 22/09/2008 15:12

the reason i spit is that if i am running around for a long time playing football i can become quite dehydrated/my mouth can get very dry. that means from time to time when there is a break in play if i a breathing heavily to try and catch my breath and trying to swallow saliva at the same time it can be quite uncomfortable so i'll just spit or get a water bottle and rinse my mouth and spit.
as huwedwrads friend says you get a build up of spit in your mouth that you have to get rid of. swallowing it will often lead to disrupting your breathing or it going down the wrong way so spitting is the easiest thing.

no excuse for it when walking along the street though.

I dont see your views as being intollerant jesuswhatnext... surely we shouldnt have to tollerate that?

I have to confess that I do spit out yuckiness when running. If I get a build up in my mouth it inhibits breathing properly so it has to go. I do not spit on the pavement or anywhere where people would obviously walk.
