AIBU?

Sometimes I feel like a grumpy old lady before my time. Is it unreasonable to resent having paper money then a receipt dumped on your hand with all the coins on top. I have been left feeling a nuisance as I try and pour the coins into my wallet without dropping anything else I might be holding, whilst being stared at by the cashier and the next in queue who are waiting for me to get out of the way.

What happened to offering to put the receipt in the bag? And why can't notes be put between forefinger and thumb with the coins in the palm?

Should probably just try and chill...

chill. It can be annoying but not worth getting yourself worked up about.

hate it when you politely put the money in to their hand and your change is dumped on the counter, makes my teeth itch!

Try being me. My disability means I have funny fingers and it takes me a few seconds to get change out of my purse or juggle the change and notes when it's given to me like this.

Before now shop assistants have (without asking) taken my purse off me and got money out . Grrrrrr!

oh YANBU I hate it too! So much so that whenever I worked in retail I would always make a point of handing people their coins first, then giving them their note/receipt after they had got rid of them. Time after time I would bring it up in training, and whenever I was boss lady I would insist it was done this way, but a lot of people I worked with thought I was mad!

oooo - it drives me mad too.

I agree - this is SSOOOO annoying. It annoys me that the people who run huge global supermarkets don't bother to do one minute's worth of staff training on how to hand change.

I never have the right change........well ok if I've been to another shop first I sometimes do - but I clear out my purse everytime I've been to the shop and save anything less than 20p in my pot - and if I've just got change from somewhere else I'm not giving it away - it's my savings

Have receipts in my purse -and as I usually get fed up aftera few weeks, and end up throwing all the receipts/mini-statements etc out in one go.

why is it preferable to have coins on the bottom and notes on the top? surely either way you can pour the coins in your purse and put the note in after/first depending on which way you get given your change. to me either way is as easy as the other.

YANBU. This really annoys me. I grew up serving customers and in the days before tills calculate the change, we counted it into customers hands, change first!

I especially hate change dumped on counters - that's just plain rude!

I should also get out more!!

I HATE this.

The OP is right. You end up stuck with a purse in one hand and a note covered in coins in the other hand.

And then the shop assistant stares at you with pursed lips tapping her foot while you struggle to get it in your purse.

Fuckers.

I find the best way to deal with this is by snatching your hand away the instant they've finished putting the notes in it. Then they have to hang onto your coins while you sort yourself out.

we have quite a few shops where they out your change in a little dish to give you, but that's a religious/cultural thing. Likewise cahnge being put on the countertop if no little dish handy.

In fact we have one fish shop with a separate cashier, so you order your fish from the fishmonger, he gives you a receipt and your trot along to the booth to pay.

I remember the staff in our local Kwik Save being trained to put though a trolley full of shopping in a minimum time - before the days of scanners of course. They had to remmeber the prices of everything, besides counting your change back correctly.

Cappuccino
I have normally said " I can MANAGE, thank YOU", in a loud voice, thru gritted teeth.

I don't mind people asking if I need help, I HATE people just doing it.

Mind you, I've been physically restrained once by a shopper who didn't think I should go out to the carpark until she had found my carer .....

years ago when I worked in retail, we had to stroke the customers hand as we gave them back their change . It apparently made them feel welcomed .

There is a woman in a shop near my grandad who sticks her hand out, holds it open for your money while waggling her fingers and drumming the fingers on her other hand on the counter.

Now that's rude!!

What on earth did you SAY to her?

Report
Cappuccino · 22/09/2008 11:19

clumsymum how odd

no-one has even attempted to restrain my dd1 as she clatters madly into the car park on her walking frame to the sound of my shrieking "COME BACK! COME BACK!"
