A parent we know is taking her child, as a birthday present, to a pop concert quite a distance away. She is willing to take one of mine (and another family's child) along as well.

She has only asked that we pay the ticket price - but there is a booking fee per ticket and both OH and I feel we should pay that. What we aren't so sure about is whether to offer a contribution to petrol cost - or maybe just to buy the child a nicer than usual birthday present/ offer to take them somewhere.

Added to the complication - we don't know what the other family will do and they aren't as well off (single parent). My inclination is probably not to offer to pay petrol, mainly because of the other family.

But I'm really not sure what we should do......

Well if she's taking her DS anyway, the only extra cost will be the tickets, yes? So I wouldn;t offer to pay for petrol, but would offer to reciprocate at some other point (maybe for your kid's birthday?)

I would just opay for the ticket as she asked. Afterall , it's her birthday treat for her dd not yours. I wouldn't expect any contribution for petrol to something like this.

I would just slip the family a tenner or give you child some spending money to buy all 3 kids some sweets snacks or go to your local poundland or sweetshop and buy sweets for all the kids

there is probably going to be a separate birthday sleepover - so it's not like this is a birthday outing for friends IYSWIM.

My kid wanted to go anyway and then one of us would have had to go too.

Sweets probably a good idea.
